Lumix 12-35mm (version 1) OIS on BMPCC 4K

PostWed Oct 17, 2018 4:24 pm

It's been reported before, but just to confirm if the engineers are listening: OIS on the 12-35mm (version 1) does work, but not well, compared to the performance of the same lens on the BMPCC. And there's an odd result when adding stabilization in Resolve, with an enormous zoom-in on some shots, for reasons which aren't clear (there's not *that* much apparent movement).

Here's hoping a firmware update brings OIS to the standard of this lens on the BMPCC.

Lumix 12-35mm (version 1) OIS on BMPCC 4K

Thanks for the report. What does it mean by not working well? We have no control for OIS other than providing power and making sure it is on or off.

The footage is free of small jitters but has a jerky quality (larger tilting movements, side to side), not present with the same lens on the BMPCC.

If you wish, I'll supply a sample, PM me.

For what it's worth, I haven't noticed that with mine. OIS seems to work as well with it on the P4K as on my GH4.

Truth is, I'm not longer sure. I'll need to look at it again, the dissatisfaction may have been over-hasty.

I own both the 12-35 and 35-100 version 1 lenses but not the PCC4K yet, so I have been particularly interested in footages from the camera using such lenses. And so far I am pleased with what I see and read about.

I've read somewhere, that you should update those lenses to firmware 1.3, to get the best results on the Pocket4K.

I'm up to date with firmware, but as pointed out by Kristian Lam above, it's hard to see how the camera could make any difference, it doesn't process anything on its own, it just records. On any given body, OIS is either working or it isn't, don't think now there could be anything in-between, looks like my mistake.

I also wonder if the difference you're seeing between OIS performance with that lens on the original BMPCC versus OIS performance on the same lens mounted on the BMPCC 4K has to do with the larger sensor on the BMPCC 4K?

I could be way off base here, but my understanding is that camera shake is more of an issue with smaller sensors, and OIS may have more of a noticeable effect on the original BMPCC. Not sure how to explain the difference you're seeing in stabilization in Resolve, though.

I just got my camera body yesterday, and slapping the 12-35 on it was a disappointment indeed.
It doesn't get recognized by the camera at all!
The aperture doesn't show and the aperture button is inactive, I can't even focus.
I'm not sure if I got a faulty lens, a faulty body, or if I need to firmware upgrade the lens.
I don't have another m4/3 camera right now so i'll have to find one to do the upgrade.. does anyone encountered the same issue with first gen unpatched lumix 12-35 ?

When I got my original BMPCC (the 2013) model, it didn't recognize my second-generation Lumix 12-35 mm either -- no aperture or focus, no communication at all. That turned out to be a defective camera; we tried the same lens on another MFT body and it worked fine, and tried several other MFT lenses on the Pocket all of which were unrecognized. So in your case you should go to a camera store and try a different MFT lens on it that has autofocus to see if that works (e.g., one of the Olympus lenses or the second-generation Panasonic 12-35). That can help you narrow down the problem.

Also, the early release of the Panny 18-35 needed a firmware update to work on the original Pocket, so if you have one of these Ver1 lenses with the original FW, thst is the issue, and a FW update on the lens will fix it. That said, you need a Oly or Panny camera body to do the update — back to the camera store

Thanks, that's very useful information!
I managed to firm upgrade my lens from 1.2 to 1.3, no improvement.

So I tried with another Panny lens and 2 other Olympus.
Same : no connection with the camera whatsoever (no focus control, no aperture control.)

My reseller is talking with BMD right now, probably a faulty camera, hope they will replace it. :?

I'm wondering what the barrel distortion is like with that lens since [to my knowledge] the Pocket 4K doesn't correct lens distortion like a Panasonic or Olympus body does. Has anyone tested this?

I'm actually having no trouble at all with my Pana 12-35 (V1 @ FW 1.3). It works fine and the OIS always kicks in when I start recording. Already shot a video for a client with it and everything worked as intended.

It's substantial, at 12mm.

https://www.lenstip.com/367.6-Lens_revi ... rtion.html

That site measures 12mm distortion at -6.54%, though it falls off rapidly as focal length increases. Resolve does have a function for lens correction, though the analysis feature yields unreliable results -- sometimes it works, sometimes the correction introduces far more distortion.

Thanks for the link. My search for a [usable] wide angle native M4/3 lens with auto-focus continues.
