Angelbird CFast/SD/SSD group buy

PostTue Oct 23, 2018 12:50 pm

Dear all,

as Angelbird is an Austrian producer of flash based storage media, I took the advantage of living in the same country and contacted Angelbird with the idea of organizing a group buy offered to forum users (currently the official BMD forum, bmcuser and German slashcam.de).

Today I had a long talk on the phone with Roman, the company owner. We talked about the idea and how we can handle the logistics and what kind of benefit all forum members could get.

So how can this be done?

1. I'd like to hear your feedback on what kind of media you are interested the most and the amount you'd gonna buy so we can get a rough idea on the volume.
For example I am interested in getting 2x 512 GB CFast cards. But they can also offer a bundle of e.g. 1x 256GB SD card + 512 GB SSD2GO PKT. Or any other bundles/storage sizes you can need. If you would be interested into their card readers, that is possible too. Or their latest 1 TB CFast cards, announced a few weeks ago.

Just have a look onto their website what they can offer: https://www.angelbird.com

After we get a better overview what people really want, Roman is going to make the bundles and special prices. We will also get product pictures and spec sheets.

2. In the end of November I will send out the special prices for those how are interested by private message, as those prices will be a limited one time offer (hope you understand)

3. After everything has been settled you will be able to place your special order on their webshop (it will either work with a time limited discount code or they prepare a special store page for those offers).
However, paying, worldwide shipment, product registration and warranty will be handled exclusively by Angelbird. You will be able to pay via credit card, paypal, or payment in advance.

Note:
Angelbird is NOT a Chinese-one-guy-sells-stuff-online thing, they are a trustworthy company from the heart of the European Union and I have been in direct phone contact with them several times. They are for example the exclusive CFast card suppliers for ARRI's Alexa. What's good enough for ARRI, can't be wrong for the rest of us ;-)

EDIT:
Roman is the company owner, not sales manager.

I am all for this. I’m looking for 4 256gb pro av cfast 2.0 cards and if the price is cheaper, with shipping to the U.S., than B&H’s price of $1499.90 for a 4 pack then I’m in. I would also like to add their cfast/usb-c reader into this deal too.

Thanks so much for looking into this.

Thanks for this Robert... also very interested. In addition to singles I'd be interested in seeing what the cost for packages of 2's, 3's, and 4's might be.

Angelbird CFast/SD/SSD group buy

PostTue Oct 23, 2018 5:07 pm

Group buys are popular on REDuser. NiSi had a group buy for their excellent 4mm 4x4” and 4x5.65” Nano IRND filters. They offered a 30% discount if a threshold in sales was reached, 20% for a lower threshold, and 10% regardless of the amount of sales. So you had to commit to the sales without knowing your final cost. The 30% threshold was met so everyone was happy it worked out well. I had participated in the discussions and had followed the filters since they were introduced at a trade show much earlier, but the timing was bad for me since I was out of budget at the deadline. The sales manager, Rocky, knew my concern and within a month when I had the funds, he gave me the 30% discount! That’s how you make a customer for life.

Robert, you might pass that discount scheme along to Roman to see if there’s any merit in it.

Great work Robert. I echo what Rick mentioned, the greater the number of people committing should drive a greater discount.

Ideally, if enough people join the group buy then overall this strengthens our buying position. A 30% discount would be very attractive!

That said, I'd be interested in a 2 x 256GB pack if the price was right.

Tristan, you mentioned you would buy a couple of units if the price was right. The way the NiSi promotion worked was that people had to commit in the forum that they would buy a set of filters. Let’s say the list price was $1,000. You knew you would get a 10% discount to $900 just for participating. If maybe 10 people committed, the 20% discount or $800 price would be billed to you. If 20 people committed, the 30% discount gave you a $700 cost. [All costs are illustrative.]

So you couldn’t say, I’ll buy if the price goes to $700. You had to share some of the risk to earn the large discount. This wasn’t like B&H Photo’s dramatic one day sales. If you sleep in you miss the sale. This promotion went on for at least a month so you could do your research and make an informed decision.

Yep, I understand how those group buys work. I've participated in, and followed, quite a few on REDUser over the years. But it was also clear on what the savings, and risks, would be.

In this group buy there's no indication on any of those things - such as the actual discount, how more users can increase the saving etc - just a private message with the "special prices."

So unless I have some indication of what those "special prices" are, I don't actually know what I'm committing to. Therefore I'm reluctant to commit.

For those interested in cards from Angelbird, I can say that the service these guys provide is outstanding.
We bought a pack of four Cfast cards through a reseller. After a year one of the cards refused to mount. Not in the camera, not in the computer. I tried it again the next day. Nothing. But I left the card in the reader and after 10 minutes it suddenly mounted again.
So I did not feel comfortable using that card anymore and turned to my the reseller, who did not find it urgent enough and did nothing. (they of course lost me as a client)

I mailed Angelbird with the same complaint. They told me these issues I described should never happen. They asked me to send the card back and offered to send me a new one! :D Service like this goes a long way!
We use these cards intensively and never had any other complaints.

One week left to give angel bird some big numbers. So anyone on the fence join up. Arri approved cards. More peace of mind has to be worth paying a little more. The more that join the cheaper the cards.

I'd like to know what the prices are for this.

I just took delivery of an ADATA Premier One V90 SDXC 256GB for 130€ or $150.

I just let the P4K record 3:1 raw and that wasn't an issue.

I realise I haven't been up to date regarding what's possible with SD cards these days.

Re: Angelbird CFast/SD/SSD group buy

PostThu Dec 20, 2018 11:02 am

Hi guys,
sorry for being so quiet on this group buy. I was swamped with two big client projects to finish in a very narrow time frame which brought me nearly to my physical limits. Together with taking care of family (especially my little daughter), helping a friend with his latest feature film I left this part here a bit back on the floor. Finally all work has been finished successfully.

Anyway, I just talked to Roman (owner of Angelbird) and here are the good news for everyone having waited so long. You will be able to order in the next days anything from their shop and get a significant % off of the normal price (btw they just have lowered their CFast prices, too), by using a special promo code.
The offer will last until mid of January, so plenty of time to think it through.

You can get the promo code via private message from me. I will send the code to everyone who has already posted here and of course you just can PM me if you haven't replayed in this thread yet.

Please don't share the promo code in public - like posting it somewhere on websites. But of course you are free to give it in private to other friends and colleagues - so they can use it for buying the stuff discounted too.

Note 1:
The discount will be worth it, rest assured.

Note 2:
If something isn't on stock so you can't order it, just wait a few days and reorder - they are trying to restock as fast as possible. If you are running out of time, then please contact Angelbird support stuff directly and they will try to work it out for you.
For example 256 GB CFast cards are out of stock today, will be in stock tomorrow (I just called Roman again to make sure this won't become a problem for anyone trying to place an order).

Note 3:
Since today the 1TB CFast card is available :-)
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

So, definitively interested but unable to PM Robert.
