BMPCC4K Loupe or sun shade

PostTue Nov 06, 2018 10:01 am

I had the camera out for a test shoot on a bright sunny day. Even with the screen cranked to 100% it's barely, if at all, usable. Has anyone seen a loupe or sun shade on the market yet. It shouldn't take too long before someone comes out with one.

The Grid 5.0 Viewfinder has been out for years. It's designed for BMCC.

I contacted them recently about whether it's compatible with the Pocket 4K, and they confirmed it is.

Thanks. Good stuff.

Now we need a mod for the BM Viewfinder to use it with the camera, that takes HDMI in. The Wooden Camera mod is being discontinued and it was SDI in only.

You would need to add a SDI to HDMI Converter in the mod, as the BM EVF is a native SDI only. This would add bulk and cost to the mod, making it impractical. I did the existing WC mod to my BM EVF, it works brilliantly, but as previously pointed out, it is SDI only.

You would end up with a EVF the size of the Zacuto Gratical. A better idea is a new design BM EVF formthr new Pocket Camera 4K, thst is around the size of the BM Ursa EVF without the mounting arm and extra hardware.

Tristan, did the Grid5 for BMCC use magnets to hold everything in place? I vaguely remember something used magnets which I imagine won’t work with the carbon fibre reinforced polycarbonate body on the BMPCC4K.

Ray, it can. You just need a EVF with HDMI inputs, which the Zacuto Gratical does, but the two smaller and lighter high end models, the Zacuto Eye and BM’s EVF with the Wooden Camera mod are SDI only, so the HDMI output of the camera need to be converted to SDI for these two EVFs. Also the Cineroid EVFs have HDMI inputs in addition to SDI. The Cineroid and Gratical are just a bit on the large side with batteries added.

It has a frame that sticks to the body - around the viewfinder - with magnets built in. The loupe then snaps onto that.

For curiosity sake Why? It should be more than enough. considering you also have :

4.3" LCD Display with 1280x720px Resolution with 170-degree Viewing Angle
HDMI to SDI Conversion
Histogram, Vectorscope, False Color and Zebra Overlays
Focus Peaking, Frame Guides, Audio Columns, Timecode, and DSLR Scale
1/4"-20 and Arri Rosette Mounting Options
Multiple Power Options: Sony NP-F, DC2.5mm, Mini-XLR
Ability to Upgrade via mini-USB, and a loope.

That is the same idea as the Cineroid, but larger yet. It would work. Having full HD resolution over a720 display (which is fine in many situations), is you get finer detail and once enlarged with the loupe, an easier time pulling a accurate focus. Try taking a look through both and you will see the difference.

Also, the harder your eye has to work, the more trying it becomes.

I don't find it adequate for critical focus, even with peaking. I'll start with a sunshade and try to wait for someone to make a loupe designed for the P4K lovely display.

Joe, thst 5-inch display is just too large for a loupe to work effectively. Also, how you going to use the touch screen with it on? SmallHD solved this issue on their 5-inch 501/502 monitors by having the screen display window down to a smaller area of the monitor, that could be viewed comfortably. Screen control was via a small IR Remote, not touch screen.

Several loupes hinge up and away from the touchscreen. Since some already exist for other 5-inch screens, I'm fairly confident this nut can be cracked.

That said, I'm also interested in an outdoor bright 7" screen that could do double duty as a field monitor. http://www.feelworld.cn/ShowInfo.aspx?i ... -IPS-Panel

Viewing the spectra 5 inch monitor is great you can see the full screen and if you need to touch the
screen just flip up the loope.

But ideally someone should develop something like the "sidefider" loope for the bmp4h configuration.

I'm thinking that the Wooden Camera mod could be reconfigured by WC to have a built in HDMI to SDI converter to be turned on by a switch, I think that's the smallest, best, cheapest solution that would work with a ton of cameras. If Wooden won't do it surely someone can. Can anyone pass this suggestion on to their contacts at Wooden :)

I've decided to build my own loupe by building a frame (or loupe adaptor) for my Hoodman - the model designed for the Canon 5D - so I can attach it to the Pocket 4K.

I designed and 3D printed a hinged "loupe adaptor" that I could attach to my Atomos Ninja2. This is a rough test using that on my Pocket 4k. The optics work great, and so does the ergonomics when using the loupe with the other components (battery & RedRock stealth).

BMPCC4K Loupe or sun shade

PostMon Jun 17, 2019 7:58 am

Hi,

That looks great

Which version of the Hoodman did you use? Did they produce different ones for 5D Mk I, II etc. ?

I have a Zacuto for the 5D MkII and tried to mod it but it couldn’t focus that far back, so as to encompass the BMPCC4K’s wide screen.

One last pic of my sunshade. It detaches via velcro easily and folds up. I can access all buttons or the touchscreen too. An inexpensive solution too.

That looks very good. Pleas keep us informed about its availability.

BTW, this design is more properly referred to as a "loupe", not an "EVF".

"Why do you have the SSD mounted backwards on the SmallRig holder?"

Because for me in the normal position the usb cable protrudes towards the lens and gets in the way of me manually accessing my lens focus ring. I often operate the focus and aperature with my left hand. I find the cable in this forward position to be annoying..more so than the risk of a loose usb cable occuring, so i flip the SSD around.

I like your idea.
Have you considered making a spacer for an existing loupe? e.g.(https://kamerar.com/collections/lcd-viewfinders)
Something that goes between the camera and a loupe that can be adjusted.

I have one of these for my BMPCC, they work well. https://kamerar.com/collections/lcd-vie ... nder-bmpcc

Re: BMPCC4K Loupe or sun shade

PostThu Jul 04, 2019 7:28 pm

I recently picked up this loupe for my BMPCC 4K on Ebay for $91.17 USD delivered. I am nearsighted and use contact lenses which do not focus when I am close to a camera without reading glasses. I have found that the non-adjustable lens on this loupe is ideal for me to see the magnified image clearly with my eyes pressed firmly against it (without reading glasses).

https[/i]://www.ebay.com/itm/5-LCD-VIEWFINDER-Magnetic-version-for-Blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera-4k/333160008523?hash=item4d91e24b4b:g:X14AAOSwEbxceSiR

It is handmade fiberglass and I found that although the magnet holds it in place, as I move my head around while pressing against it it came off a few times and got scratched when it hit the ground. I appreciate the ease of removal and repositioning as I touch the screen for adjustments but I will add a cable to it to keep it from falling when I bump it.

I took this picture with my cell phone against the loupe in bright sunlight overhead at 1 PM. Ignore the glare as I had some light bleed from not positioning the cell phone properly.
