DC cable extension

I have a v-mount with a decent length cable but its not long enough to reach my camera when shoulder rigging it.

Can I buy a normal DC power extension cable (female/male) and extend the v mount cable to the camera, or is there a better route you guys would recommend?

I remember reading something about plug sizes and polarity on the ends but I cant seem to find the information again.
