How many filters is too many filters? BMPCC4K

PostFri Dec 21, 2018 8:12 pm

I'm considering stacking four filters for some of my setups:

A variable ND filter to cut exposure is essential.
As is a polariser for skies/reflections.
An IR cut filter can be very useful to keep blacks black (if the BMPCC4K is anything like the OG).
And with the BMPCC4K on pre-order I'm seriously considering a Promist filter as the images it produces are looking to be a little sharper than I'd like.

With all four filters stacked on top of one another, how much am I negatively affecting my image vs the advantages provided by each?

A polarizer together with a vari ND is a bad idea, because a vari is already two polarizers stacked together.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I use either rectangular NiSi ND and Schneider 715 IR Cut filters or SLR Magic Vari-ND II and B+W 486 IR Cut screw-on. Often though I skip the IR Cut and use the SLR Magic Image Enhancer Pro.

I don’t think anyone would regularly use 4 filters stacked and even three might affect the image quality but less so if they are good quality.

The biggest issue is the variable ND.

There's no such thing as a good one really...they're all a bit of a compromise...

For example...it's in russian and a test of the examples of Kenko (brand) compared to others but you'll get the idea...

I bought a used but like new B+W .9 (3 stop) ND filter. Am wondering if the P4K has an internal IR filter.
