Pixel-to-Pixel zoom for focus? Ursa MP

PostFri Jan 11, 2019 8:37 pm

I love my URSA Mini Pro.

But, <new feature request> I would love it even more if the screen had a mode for zooming all the way to pixel to pixel for achieving sharpest focus quickly. The 2X zoom is good, but pixel-to-pixel would be killer.

I've looked but I am not aware of any on-camera monitor that accepts DCI 4K input over SDI (and offers the pixel-to-pixel for sharp focus).

The Video Devices Pix E does, and records full DCI 4K as well, with excellent audio support too.

Isn't that the double tap on the UMP screen?

I don't think the double tap = pixel to pixel. I could be wrong but I haven't ever seen an actual spec on this. The manual just says "the area you tap will be magnified."

I'm quite sure it is pixel to pixel, AFAIR the image is more magnified while recording in 4.6k compared to UHD.

Whatever it is, it’s large enough to get an accurate focus, even with a WA lens.

You are right. Even if it says "2x" that might be a simplification, since the resulting image is tighter in UHD than in 4.6K. Set to ProRes, of course, to avoid windowing.

So what's the pixel resolution of the LCD? I can't find that speced anywhere.

I'm not convinced it's pixel to pixel...

On the UM46k it is 1920x1080, on the UMP it is less but I don't know how much less.

But I just tried it out on my UM46k and unfortunately it turned out that it really isn't pixel to pixel. If you jump in on the screen to the very right or left you always can see part of the cross hair, even in 4.6k mode where you shouldn't see it until scrolling to the side.

Here's my test / concept for "it's not pixel to pixel."

I set my UMP to DCI 4K; when I double-tap to get "2X" and move the little box into the corner, it's pretty easy to judge that the zoomed in region of the screen = roughly 1/4th of the total.

Now set the camera to full HD; the "2X" zoom in this mode is also roughly 1/4 of the screen.

They can't both be pixel to pixel....

I did the same test on my URSA Mini 4.6K in 4.6K and in HD. We know the 5” monitor is a 1920x1080 display as is the BMVF. When you double tap on the monitor it displays a quarter area box describing the current view within the bounds of the recorded bounds. It’s the same quarter area box whether recording in 4.6K or an HD window.

For those who want a double-tap display greater than pixel-to-pixel for ease of focus, you can see how much that helps by working in HD windowed.
