BMPCC4K Slow-Mo Rolling Shutter Jello Problems

PostThu Jan 17, 2019 2:26 pm

I brought a new BMPCC4k on a shoot last weekend, planning to shoot a mix of 24 and 60fps footage. The 60fps is simply unusable due to the rubber band/wobbly jello look for the higher frame rate (400ISO, 180 shutter angle, recorded both to approved CFast cards and a Samsung T5 via USB). These aren't even moving shots, but still objects shot using a shoulder rig, trying to do slow pans/racks. I'm not seeing complaints about this broadly online - mostly I'm seeing people celebrate how little effect the rolling shutter seems to have on their footage. Is it possible that I have a defective unit? Or that it might have shipped with outdated firmware for which an update could solve the issue? Admittedly, I haven't checked the latter yet - I'll be doing that tomorrow but hoped to get this conversation started ASAP in case that doesn't address it. The next shoot for which I'd like to use it is coming up quickly!

Thanks for your help,

- D

If you really want help, please post sample footage. Otherwise no one here knows what you are talking about. And please give more information lens and focal length used.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Agreed, please post some sample footage of what you mean.

The last time someone complained about rolling shutter on the P4k, it turns out he was whip panning even though he said he wasn't.

I did some of my usual electric fan tests and found the Pocket 4K to be closer to other cine cameras than the typical movie mode of stills cameras.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
