Interesting find Leon, this solves the ENG lens hassle/issues when buying a new camera. But what about just getting the lens on its own? Currently only listed as being available with the Ursa Broadcast camera?
Cheers

Leon, I've found the info here:
https://www.nmav.de/Fujinon-URSA-Bundle

The price is nice for the bundle: €7,944.64 incl. 19% VAT (€ 6,676.17 excl. VAT).
Subtracting the price for the URSA Broadcast - that means the lens would cost €3,500 excl. VAT.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I guess there will be some system to buy the lens separately by sending in your Ursa broadcast Serial number. I mean. otherwise all owners of a Ursa broadcast should buy a new camera to have the lens?

3,5K for a 4K lens is not that expensive. Most HD lenses do cost that. But i wonder what options does it have?

Is it compatible with a normal zoom remote. or only lanc.
Will it be able to remote focus. (the ursa is capable of sending this data.. If it works is a second ;) )
Will the event be streamed?

Agreed Daniel, €3500 is not a bad price, and having a focus Servo is also one of my questions. Additionally, it lists electronic back focus adjustment, is this finally working with the Broadcast camera?

No Fujinon has a electronic backfocus system. Which means you still have to push a button, zoom in / out push button in out push button..

i have JVC HM890 with a digital Fuji lens which also has this system. (amongst having IOS and motorised focus ** Even auto focus if you want)
But once you detached the lens and need to adjust your backfocus again you have to look up the correct procedure and takes about 10 minutes to get it right..

Rather give me a backfocus ring. Works much much faster. :D

Yes, and more reliable. I had a Canin XL-H1 with “electronic back focus) on its included zoom lens, did not work very well and was hard to get the bsck focus set correctly. :( Ended up removing the Canin kens and putting my Fuji Servo Zoom on it with a Manual backfocus, and as you said, Daniel, much quicker to set. 8-)

Can't be the Canon XH-A1 because that one had a fixed lens block and no user-adjustable back focus.
I guess you meant the Canon XL-H1, right?

I am seriously considering this lens, below is the spec sheet I found.

https://www.avacab-online.com/WebRoot/S ... LA16x8.pdf

I presume the discussion re- the electronic back focus is just that, back focus and that the lens is parfocal?

I come from owning the Canon XL-H1 with 16xManual lens which had manual back focus (hardly used the stock lens).

Fujinon 4K lens designed for Blackmagic URSA Broadcast

PostTue Mar 19, 2019 8:14 pm

Fujinon zooms are normally parfocal but use a manual back focus adjustment to dial it in when the lens or mount may have a variance due to wear and tear or simply temperature fluctuations.

This electronic focus button that adjusts the FFD has me confused though. Is this intended to be used when you want critical focus to be on a different object as you zoom? If it’s a required focus adjustment while zooming, I suppose it’s not the end of the world given it’s electronic, but doesn’t sound as appealing.

No doubt NAB 2019 will have this demonstrated.

Rick, I think the back focus is electronically controlled via the controller in the zoom handle, vs the mechanical adjustment of turning the manual Back focus ring, adding a more convenient adjustment that can be done on the fly, perhaps.

That said, B&H is packaging the Fujion XA20x8.5BRM, a non-Broadcast Video Zoom with internal mnpanual focus and Servo Zoom, lens along is $5K ($600 off).

For a better quality HD zoom that is close to 4K quality the Fujion HA18x7.6BERD ENG B4 Zoom, is an electronic Servo Zoom and Focus lens, that will auto focus on the Ursa Boradcast, and allow remote focus and zoom via the ATEM. However, this is a $20K lens.

It will be interesting to see what the price of the new 4K Zoom formthe Ursa Boradcast will cost.

I now have the LA16 lens and generally pleased with it so here are a few initial observations.

One feature that I didn't see as advertised or mentioned, that I found by trial and error, is that if you engage the macro ring you can use the focus button on the URSA Broadcast. Having said that, I find it's much quicker, easier and more accurate to manually focus the lens anyway!

There is a small bit of colour aberration on some exterem telephoto shots, but really is slight.

The back focus was easy to setup and I found the best results to follow the lens guidance of doing the procedure 3M from the back focus chart. Engage servo zoom, Zoom all the way in, press the F.f. button for three seconds, manually focus, press it again, the lens will go Wide, re-focus & press the F.f. button once more to finish the procedure. The focus holds well across the full range.

The auto-exposure button on the lens appears to require you to turn the camera off and back on when switching from Manual to Auto in order for the BM Menus to enable you to select IRIS options and the Auto-Exposure mode, however this could be a BMD issue rather than lens though.

Once done, you can turn the switch back to manual and use the "Push Auto" switch on the lens. If the camera is turned off / on with the lens in manual exposure, then you will need to turn it of again switch to Auto Iris on the lens an switch back on if you want to re-instate auto exposure.

Servo Zoom: fastest from Telephoto => Wide (and vice-versa) ~1.5 seconds
slowest (using lens rocker) ~ 39 seconds

Macro Mode: Very pleased with this and even a few inches away you can zoom in to about 40mm before you lose focus. When you engage macro focus there are no end stops on the focus ring but I don't see that as an issue.

In the UK it cost £3500 + VAT so about £4K. It's currently only available as a bundle although as I recently purchased the Broadcast I was able to just qualify as a bundle.

Rick, the Fujinon LA16 is a B4 lens for the Broadcast camera, as it might work on you UM4.6 with the B4 Mount, you will be back at shooting in a 2K or HD window. The Fuji MK is going to work full gate on the UM4.6 and would be my choice for your camera. You could also use the MK on the Pocket camera.

Okay, thanks. Rather than spend money on something that isn’t parfocal, then I’m going to try and save for the Fujinon MK and on the BMPCC4K, I can add the 1.33x-65 Anamorphot to get a wider field of view.

Fujinon 4K lens designed for Blackmagic URSA Broadcast

PostFri Apr 12, 2019 1:33 pm

Thank you very much, Peter. I never saw that review last year. It’s interesting Matt said the MK glass lacked character and tended toward magenta. I had heard previously that the colour was slightly toward yellow. Either way it’s close to neutral so grading is going to give you the look you need. And the glare test should also have the light shining off axis which wasn’t done. You can have glare with the bright light out of frame but hitting the front element so it would have been better to see it that was a concern.

Overall great value and I hope Matt does a similar test with the DZO 20-70mm when it’s ready for its for its screen test.

Below is a link to a short compilation of some shots I did recently with the URSA Broadcast / LA16 combination whilst road testing . I have lingered on some shots so as to allow the viewer time to look at details and have done a mixture of zooms, contrast shots, and macro. The video is available on Vimeo as 4K.

That zoom is looking good. Impressive shot of the bees and closer landscapes although outdoors shooting zoomed into the far distant objects brings in the fuzziness of the atmospheric dust and moisture. The joys of a parfocal lens.

Thank you. The zoom is pretty good and the zoom rocker can let the zoom be very gradual and long or quite quick. The bees shot was using the macro facility so I was very close to the bee hotel. The day was quite fuzzy and there was also haze on some of the shots as you say. The shot with the river (after the initial two mist shots) has a lot of small movement detail like people, cars, birds and a train in the distance and the lens performed really well resolving the fine detail. The shot of the bench by the road was supposed to show the bokeh when fully wide focussed on a close subject, but perhaps I should have used a different foreground object!

Declan, thanks for the sample shots. One question: Did you have the in camera sharpening activivated? Because to me the images look a bit oversharpend.

Hi Robert,
I did have detail sharpening set to Low in camera on all shots. I also graded the shots quickly with noise reduction set to 2 frames, strength 8, and sharpening set to 48 and scaled two thirds to compensate. Perhaps the combination has made it slightly a little over sharp. I have found that have detail sharpening off in camera produces the best results. All shots were filmed using the film profile and have had minimal changes in post (just noise reduction, sharpening and contrast). Also, I had uploaded the wrong version, so this has now been updated to include some additional information and is slightly longer.

Thanks for that detailed answer!
Detail sharpening in camera was only meant to be used when the camera is in a live camera environment for example a projection. Otherwise it is better to keep it off - as you found out during your tests.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a storage case for the LA16x8BRM, URSA Broadcast and URSA Studio Viewfinder? I'd like to store the whole unit in an assembled manner if possible.

The case / bag I got for my fully assembled URSA Broadcast (that is Camera+SSD+Mounted battery + Shoulder Mount + ViewFinder+Mic Holder) is the Sachtler Bags Dr. Bag - 5

The yellow and grey dividers I used from spares to create a compartment for the batteries and charger. I know I haven't got the LA16 on in this photo, but trust me, it fits! Also have the B4 (or EF) lens adapter, matte box, and lens cleaning kit stored comfortably. I usually have the V-plate under the camera velcroed to the bottom.

This shot shows the bag closed but with the two additional zip sides undone, I keep the mains power block and the matte box rods in here and the other side just lens caps & other small bits.

Hope this helps.

We just received two of these lenses with our URSA Broadcast cams along with an ATEM 2 m/e 4k, 20x20hub, Advanced panel, monitors and recorders.

I updated the firmware to 8.02 and started hooking things up yesterday to test and had the UB SDI send/return into the switcher and was playing with the software camera control and got the iris and color correction to work but also the focus and zoom worked which I was very surprised and pleased about.

However today I can only get the iris (and color controls) to work; zoom and focus software controls don't function. I power cycled camera and switcher, verified the Auto/Man Zoom Servo switch is in Auto, redid the electronic back focus to check lens operation, but now I'm puzzled what else I could be missing.

Anyone else had this happen? Does the zoom and focus work through the ATEM software with your Fuji LA16x8?

We have almost the identical config except an M/E 1.

We've got the same issue. I've got a problem report open with Black Magic and they told me that I was the only one so far that reported this bug. Glad I'm not going crazy and someone else is experiencing this. What I've found is if you power cycle the URSA Broadcast, you can get the zoom, focus control back.

In addition, we're routing the Aux 1 from the ATEM directly to a 4K Distribution now rather than a router. Also found that since doing that, the zoom/focus are significantly more stable (although occasionally they still require a power cycle to get working).

Check out this thread for the discussion.

Thanks for the quick reply, and indeed a "one last try" power cycle on the camera brought back the focus and zoom. Also discovered (which you may know already) is that the focus ring needs to be pushed forward into Macro mode in order to disengage the manual override. If you don't, focus changes in the software return to their previous setting as soon as you stop changing them.

I must say this is a very pleasant surprise to discover a full servo 4k lens for this camera for this price! It's designation is "BRM" so really was not expecting a servo focus. Only a 16x and no extender, but still...

Thanks for the link to the thread I'll read up on that. Also was wondering about routing the returns to the cams; good to know about the BM SDI distribution 4k solution.
