Rawlite for ump g2

PostTue Mar 05, 2019 5:19 pm

Will new body need the rawlite filter? I wish the body was a new formfactor with higher build quality. The 120fps is great.

Yes, OPLF filters are very sensor specific, which is why they are expensive.
That said, the new sensor may not need the filter added.

Perhaps Rawlite will dialogue with BMD directly to get their opinion if the new sensor included changes that would be relevant to the rawlite filter. My guess is that it’s still fine, but only BMD knows if the micro lenses are identical etc.

American Cinematographer September 2019 issue.

Interesting article on musical feature Stand! shoot with UM Pro 4.6K and BMPCC4K.

I wonder if they will produce filters for the BMPCC4K or 6K?

Rawlite for ump g2

Looks like they just added the G2 as supported on the Rawlite website. It simply says G2 in orange on the mainpage, and not much else in terms of details when you click into the page.

I emailed the makers of Rawlite to ask whether it works on the G2 and they confirmed that, yes it does

So I installed it and I can confirm that:

1. Yes, the G2 needs and does benefit from an OLPF

2. The Rawlite OLPF does work on the G2 as well as it did on the G1

Do you want to see an image from the camera with the raw lite installed?
Or you want to see a photo of what the camera sensor itself looks like with the filter installed?

I've been meaning to run a before and after comparison, just for myself to have a reference. Sometime in the next week or two I'll get around to it.

Jamie you just gave yourself more work. Now I would like to see the before/after pics of it installed over the sensor. And a test screenshot of a recording at 12:1 Braw shooting anything. I'm not picky. Whenever you get time to do it. Thx

Maybe my test with the UMP 4.6K G1 is helpful too.

This is BRAW Q0 before installing the OLPF:

and this is DNG with the OLPF:

Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Nice pictures Uli, thanks.

My question is how to fix OLPF on the BMPCC6K.

Rawlite is working on an OLPF for the BMPCC 4K, so presumably they'll be coming out with one for the 6K as well.

I'm going to consider getting the OLPF for the UMP G2 considering on a recent shoot I saw some aliasing on some clothing. Hasn't happened too often in the years I've been using BMD cameras, but occasionally I have spotted it. It's on my list of things to get once I get the new tripod I want to get and the new follow focus. But those come first after I get rid of more of the credit card debt from the G2. Luckily my car loan is gone now. Haha.

Anyways, I would hope that one day Blackmagic works on an OLPF for their cameras to be built in. It definitely is helpful. And a lot of camera manufacturers make them for their cameras. Either way, I'm glad there is a third party option.

You can contact RAWLITE but yes, they make a G2 version of their filter.

When I wrote them they told me the filter I had for my UMP G1 would work in the G2 and they didn't mention a separate model for the G2. Did I get outdated or incorrect info?

I wish the was a local US option because I think the 50 dollars for shipping is ridiculous. Blackmagic Design should buy them out and manufacture their own OLPFs. Then make those available for resellers or automatically include them in the camera.

The OLPF is sensor specific, so that info is most likely correct. BMD didn't change the sensor in the G2, the new functionality is from image processing and more computing power and I/O behind the sensor, not the sensor itself.

Last night we went to the Directors Guild of America to screen Stand!, with Q&A by Director Robert Adetuyi, Writer Danny Schur and Cinematographer Roy H. Wagner. The movie set in 1919, narrates an immigrant Romeo and Juliet battle for love and a better future during a time of social and labor upheaval.

Using Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (B camera) and Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro, the film was projected in 2K and looked absolutely amazing, cristal clear images and great contrasts in dynamic range from highlights to very dark blacks.

Absolutely no aliasing or moiré, with Rawlite Optical Low Pass Filter on the Ursa Mini.
