Bring back v6.1 Focusing to Pocket 4K?

PostFri Mar 08, 2019 5:18 am

I mentioned this in another thread, but figured it should probably have its own.
Can v6.1's focusing behavior (tap to focus) be brought back to V6.2 or the next update? The new implementation of holding to focus is far too slow, especially now since moving the focus target can only be done by holding. It feels just as slow and clunky as the original pocket's focusing system, undoing the faster focusing improvements brought in by v6.1.
Can we have a toggle to change how focusing is activated (tap or hold) or at least a shorter holding period? trying to focus on some objects (edges & slanted surfaces) that require a couple of focusing attempts now take much longer to focus on.

I would agree. The double tap for 2x is great, but tap and hold for focus is slow and in some cases, unresponsive (at all). The AF improvement seen with 6.1 is all but lost now.

+1, the ideal solution would be the ability to select it in the config.

At most, make it a user option. As a cine lens user, I MUCH prefer the new behavior.

I like the old 2 tap for focus. I would like the zoom to zoom in not just cut too.

I completely agree with seeing the old single tap to focus brought back, or as a menu option. I found the previous version really quick to pop around to a different focus point, especially when following some action. Now I'm having to wait on my equipment. I hate having my equipment slow me down and I miss shots while trying to get the focus point to come up. Frustrating!

(Please add my voice to this call to Blackmagic to return to the previous tap focus (or at least give us this as a selectable option. I posted this elsewhere but this seems like a dedicated thread so I am adding it here:)

I cannot agree more! I used the previous tap focus for weeks (in 6.1) on a long form documentary I am currently shooting and it was wonderful. I have the BMPCC 4k mounted on a Ronin S and the ease of getting tap focus on fast moving shots, high and low was fantastic. My DP, an A.S.C. cinematographer agree enthusiastically.

Then...

I upgraded to 6.2 to get the BM raw capability and we have been struggling ever since getting the touch and hold focus to work smoothly. We find ourselves repeatedly touching the screen and tapping and the extra latency when it does engage is a considerable frustration. It seems that if I have any perspiration on my fingertips it compounds the problem of the screen registering my touch which did not happen with the simple tap version.

I am literally going to uninstall 6.2 ( losing the BM raw (which I love)) to go back to the previous tap focus.
Blackmagic, if you are listening, please please give us the option to have either a menu driven option to select (or revert to) the previous tap focus or select touch and hold for those who prefer. This was one time your firmware improvement resulted in a more crippled function, in my opinion.

I have not updated from 6.1. But doesn't the double tap to zoom kinda render the dedicated zoom button pointless?

Agree. I hope BMD can update the menu to let me choose the focus method.

I agree 100% !!! Much prefer the older tap to focus version, please bring it back and make it user selectable. Onset I can guarantee you it is really was a killer feature !
