Show us your Blackmagic camera collection

PostTue Mar 19, 2019 3:37 am

My six year old daughter was watching some footage from a documentary I'm cutting and asked, "Daddy, is that from your Blackmagic camera?"

I replied, "Which one? I have many."
"Really? I didn't know."
"Do you want to see them all?"
"Yes please, Dad."

So I lined them up on a bench, and realised I'd never done that before. So, here's the main tools of my trade - minus the stills cameras - and I still use all of them.

G1 I really didn't all the other added benefits but a higher frame rate would of been cool. I had the red raven and at 4.5k it could go to 120fps non-windowed

Yes indeed!

She got her first camera (water proof, shock proof) on 6th birthday, and loves it. Makes an old man proud when she takes an interest in filmmaking and photography.

I had the original Pocket Camera from the first dealer batch (sold), then original release of both Micro (Micro Cinema Sold) cameras, and now a Ursa Broadcast, which I use with the Micro Studio Camera.

Respectable collection there Denny. The Micro studio & UMB will match together very well I imagine - with same sensor and all.

Still have all my BMD cameras (even the UM4.6k PL I killed - now in a box in bits) I just can't seem to sell any of them - they are all great for their own purposes.

I'm more of a Pocket-guy. Had two Pockets, sold one, now I have a Pocket4K.

It's not even caged since Tilta does not seem to be delivering to Europe. :(

Thanks, but I have a pre-order with a german retailer. What I meant was that, after some delays, Tilta seems to be finally sending out their basic cages, since some people here have them. AFAIK none of them are from Europe though.

I want my desk to look like that one day.

My first Pocket 4k is on the way. I try to keep 3 active cameras, and I want to go to all Blackmagic as I retire/replace my Sony cameras. I keep looking at eBay and thinking about adding a Micro Cinema camera, but I think I am going to see if Blackmagic comes out with a 4k version of that next. I'm going to stick with a BRAW workflow, so I'll need to get newer cameras going forward.

Long term goal (and if income from paid jobs allows) is to get at least one URSA Mini Pro. That seems more likely now that the new version should lower the price of the existing URSA Mini Pro.

Haha, don’t tempt me. I have so much trouble letting go of gear, that might actually be a possibility.

Eli hershko wrote:I have:

Both great cameras that will cover so many shooting situations right there. And the Pocket 4k makes a great B-Cam to the UM4.6K.

pulalis wrote:I have:

URSA 4k. I’ve never shot with one of those. Picked one up in a showroom once, and was really impressed how it was built solid! More so than any BMD camera. You still like shooting with it?

MrHotter wrote:Long term goal (and if income from paid jobs allows) is to get at least one URSA Mini Pro. That seems more likely now that the new version should lower the price of the existing URSA Mini Pro.

Yeah, I’m tempted to get a G1 UMPro myself as prices are looking good. I have the URSA Broadcast which I love. Probably my most used camera now, after the Pocket 4k.

MrHotter wrote:I want to go to all Blackmagic as I retire/replace my Sony cameras.

I moved from a Canon system to Blackmagic. Was looking at something beyond 5D mkII, and was serously considering Sony. I bought the original pocket when it was half price - it was so cheap, why not? - and was so impressed with the image quality I've become hooked ever since. Ended up selling most of my Canon EF glass and started investing in vintage manual glass.

Grand, I forgot to add them Ursa 4K Ver 2 that is at the Studio. The Ursa makes a solid chroma key camera, with very forgiving with the lighting.

Yes and yes, it is our studio A Cam. The Broadcast and Micro Studios are the B Cams when needed. We do a lot of chroma key sets, and are moving back into a larger space, after loosing our main Studio several years ago, and dealing with a medium size room, as a temp studio.

Yes, I know the feeling!

Just when you think, "that's it, I'm perfectly happy now" along comes another camera with new temptations. As for how you explain to your wife, I think Fran's advice may be worth heeding :)

But yes, great combination right there the UMPro and Pocket 4k.

Anyway, very happy with the combo, looking forward

We use them with the APO Hyperprimes and that’s
a sweet combination
Next could be the

One day I'd love to shoot with the SLR Magic APO Hyper primes. Back in the day when Rick and JB first started discussing them on the forums I was super keen. But it took so long for Andrew - being a little independent producer - to get the set out I ended up buying the Sony CineAlta primes. The CineAlta primes are great lenses, albeit heavy, but the APO seem very alluring for their character and small/compact size.

Hahaha, yes it never ends! You'll probably have to tell your wife eventually, especially when she wonders what on earth that weird looking thing is you are walking around with!! I settled on the Ronin-S, and very happy with it. Great build quality, and really easy to setup and use.

Yes Tristan, you would love it!
We just made our first shot yesyerday with the
Bmpcc4k and the Ursa and they loook amazing.
The director is very very happy, and I found for
first time than there is not change in colour between
the two cameras. That’s the advantage of using
a lens kit that unifies colour. And the wight allows
the pocket deal with the APOS without any problem

This is my BMCC 2.5K EF rig.
Yes it is a little extreme. :)
It is currently in another room while the studio is being painted.
I also have a second BMCC for B camera along with a Canon handheld and DSLR.
I use it all for my YouTube channel.

I’ll be shooting with the BMPCC4K and SLRM APO 25mm prime on the narrative film July 1 in the evening. Good to know it will blend well with the URSA Mini 4.6K PL SLRM APO lenses, but the first film shoot was with the Tokina Cinema ATX 11-20mm. I’ll pop some of my test footage into that project to see how they will mix.

My first BM camera was the BMCC 2.5K EF back in early 2014.
Sold it and got a used BMPCC in 2016.
In 2017 I sold the Pocket and got a BMMCC + Assist 5.
In 2018 I got the Pocket4K and sold the BMMCC.
Recently got a G2, so it's the first time I have two Blackmagic cameras together and this time I'm definitely not selling any.

Meanwhile I would always rent the other "cooler" blackmagic camera for the bigger shoots.
It used to be the BMPC4K a few years back, then the Ursa Mini 4.6K, then Ursa Mini Pro.

I'm thinking sometimes to get a MFT 2.5K and a Pocket in good condition. Loved and miss those cameras with great nostalgia. The Pocket I got used wasn't in that great condition and was so sad I gave up my mintly preserved BMCC. I have no regrets about selling the BMMCC. Although I did cope with it for my shoots, I always wished for an actually functional pocket camera with HFR. Got much more with the Pocket4K.

Jean, I don’t plan to post a gallery of photos of cameras, but I think it’s fun for those who might and interesting to see how they’re rigged (or not). A little like classic car collectors... except we like cameras.

The Shape left hand wooden handle, SKU L15WH, that I bought (posted in the forum thread) is not compatible with the Shape system I ordered that includes rail support but no side handle, C4KROD. Shape is sending me the compatible side handle that is only bundled with their cage, BM4KHH. There is no SKU for that side handle as a separate item. Thank you to Shape for accommodating my request! I’ll post when I get the handle mounted so you see what I ended up using. A side handle should aid my handheld shooting as it will be easier to keep the camera level on the roll axis with two hands on the rig.

Just a heads up to be careful you don’t assume the two wooden handles are interchangeable as they are not.
