Camera naming convention

PostWed Mar 20, 2019 3:07 pm

My biggest hope for the URSA Mini Pro G2 is that it will start a trend of naming Blackmagic cameras so that we know what camera is the latest in each category. I do like that the camera names include the function like cinema, studio, or broadcast (even if I don't know where 'production' falls into the mix).

The more cameras that get released, the more convenient this would be for new camera buyers or for those looking at used equipment.

The next cameras could be named:
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera G3
Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera G2
Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2
etc.
Mac mini
Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine
16GB unified memory
512GB internal SSD storage
various external drives

BMD has always given rather long names to their cameras. Your suggestion is still long. I’m not pushing it, they could use the ‘generation’ designation with the acronym as the actual camera badge. I do like having the sensor resolution in there too if not HD.

BMC2.5
BMP4K
BMM
BMS4K
U4K
U4KV2
UM4.6
UMP4.6

My thoughts on this is to name the cameras with consistent grouping.

For cameras with smaller sensors, could go for Blackmagic Cinema Camera x.xK Gx.
For cameras with S35 sensors, could go for Blackmagic URSA x.xK Gx.
For cameras intended for studio, could go for Blackmagic Studio Gx.
For cameras intended for broadcast, could go for Blackmagic Broadcast Gx.

The mini, micro, professional or production is unnecessary since we already know of their physical form factor, size, and that BMD only makes professional and production ready cameras (unless otherwise noted).
URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2, Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, Panasonic GH5
PC Workstation Core I7 64Gb, 2 x AMD R9 390X 8Gb, Blackmagic Design DeckLink 4K Mini Monitor, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, Resolve Studio 18, BM Micro Panel & Speed Editor
