BMPCC4k + Viltrox EF-M2 + Sigma 18-35 Art = No AF

PostThu Mar 21, 2019 12:51 am

Finally got the camera but have a question. I can get the Sigma 18-35 with viltrox EF-M2 to work iris control, but for the life of me I can't get the focus to work when the lens is set to AF. I know the BMPCC4K doesn't have auto focus, but hold to focus isn't working, neither is the app 'BlackMagic Pocket 4K Control', or the button. I don't mind to use manual focus, but thought at least that should work with the Sigma 18-35 or does it not? If the lens is in AF or MF, the focus can be turned by hand. Wasn't sure if that is normal.

Running 6.2 on the camera, and 2.3 on the EF-M2.

Really wanting to make sure there's not something wrong with the lens since I bought it used in excellent condition.

The issue is: BMPCC4K + Sigma 18-35 Canon EF (or any EF lens) + any Speed Booster = no AF.
So AF or push to focus is not working with the Speed Boosters, until the SB manufactures update their FW to sync with the new Pocket 4K.

Is this due to the latest WM 6.2 on the BMPCC4K or it always been like this?

Has als ways been this way, at first when the new Pocket 4K came out, iris control did not work either, then the Speed Booster makers added FW updates to the SB and got iris working, but not AF. The new Pocket is using a newer MFT protocol for controlling AF, to get the touch screen focus points to work, and I think this is what is giving the SB makers problems working out how to interface to the new setup.

For me, use a SB with manual focus classic lenses for their unique attributes. If you want modern, auto or extended AF functions, then new lenses designed for extended AF functions are required, and then use the newer native MFT lenses which do work, as they were designed to do.

Thanks guys. I will probably buy a MFT lens to keep in my arsenal in the event I want to use touch to focus or the app..

I tried:
Viltrox EF-M2 II + Firmware 3.3
- no Auto Focus
Metabones Speedbooster (EF-M43 mount S) + Firmware 3.31
- Auto focus works

Auto focus works with the Metabones including through third party apps. Once again, metabones beats viltrox.
