Pocket 4K: why not FULL sensor scan for 1920 X 1080 BRAW ?

PostSat Apr 13, 2019 10:41 pm

I have recently bought BM4K, and I am very pleased with the purchase. The tests looks great, so far.

But, in spite of the fact the manual says otherwise, I cannot record 1080p BRAW other than in windowed mode. When I choose Blackmagic RAW + HD 1920 X 1080, camera selects "resolution - sensor windowed".

I record on SD cards (that work fine).
Is it something I don't know or do?
Thank you.

Then it won't be BRAW(or RAW) any more.

Capture in Full sensor mode and downscale it in post to your desired format and resolution, that way you get the best possible picture quality.

MishaEngel, it looks like you didn't really read my words or check the picture I posted here.

I said the BM manual claimed that it was possible to record braw 1080p full sensor scan.
It is not?

Thank you for your advice, though.

Hi,

Our apologies. That was an error in the user manual and would have been corrected.

Well I did read it, I must have rated your knowledge about RAW to high, sorry for that.

Braw is not technically or legally raw, didn’t you get the memo?

That is something of an open question -- given it's hybrid nature, is there anything to prevent braw from down-sampling from the full sensor and retaining whatever advantages (or just raw tab features) it may have over Prores?

Too bad there won't be an answer. Or will there?

Pocket 4K: why not FULL sensor scan for 1920 X 1080 BRAW ?

Anything may be possible, but remember Grant’s video introducing BRAW. There he illustrated moving some functionality from post processing to the camera. The ‘block’ he moved was not the first block in the chain of in-camera processes. That may be important in determining if a raw window is necessary or if raw can be downscaled in camera from a full sensor readout and still be BRAW. Clearly BRAW is not ‘raw’ by any prior definition of what raw means and that’s important.

If it's any consolation, Resolve apparently does a better job of down-sampling than the camera -- UHD braw q5, 12:1 and Prores and are all much sharper on an HD timeline than full sensor HD. So most people probably wouldn't seek out this solution -- though, viewed normally, you can't tell the difference.
