Official Rec 709 monitor lut .

PostTue Apr 23, 2019 9:26 am

Hello, I have done some googling on this subject, but been unable to find what i needed.

I am used to shooting with a rec 709 monitor LUT from the official companies. Can it be possible that Blackmagic does not have a rec 709 LUT, but simply uses "extended video" ?

I am simply interested in a official LOG to rec 709 lut from blackmagic, does anyone have any informations on this?

Thanks

Best regards

If you have a color checker you can make your own rec.709 lut, that’s what I did and it looks better than rec.709

It seems i was too fast on the trigger.

After finishing the manual it seems that; "The "video" setting is similar to the REC 709 color standard for high definition video." p. 50.

It do not like the term "similar". Alexa for an example calls their REC 709, well, 709.

Sony seems to refer to theirs as 709 conversions as well.

Is there are reason for the wording similar? Is it perhaps not a "real" log to rec709 conversion? (I am not knowledgeable in the inner workings of color science etc. so excuse me if my questions are unnecessarily vague).

Anyways, i found my answer, in the manual of course

Would you mind sharing that Chris? Asking very opportunistically.

Our Video LUT is not exactly Rec.709, so it would be technically incorrect to call it such since Rec.709 is well defined.

Extended Video is a newer more "pleasing" version of our Video mode that retains much more highlights and would be our recommended starting point for Rec.709 workflows.

I bought this yesterday and it is amazing. I've never bought a LUT before and thought $40 was expensive until I used it. This is going to save so many hours and really improves the camera so much for me. I'm coming from Canon and was missing the colours until this. So much better than the Extended Video for skin and greens in particular.

I bought this LUT too and very happy with the results. I jused it in my last little project and it was a real time saver.
