New G2 glitching out.

PostSun May 12, 2019 1:28 am

Received G2 on Friday 5/3, shot with it no problems about 4 hours on 5/4.

Exact same setup today 5/11, screen keeps glitching out with dropped frame warning and recording stopped.

Example of what's happening:

Troubleshooting steps:
1. Have reset system back to defaults
2. Have performed black calibration
3. Have tried different frame rates and resolutions
4. Same media as 5/4 shoot, Sandisk extreme 300mb SD cards. Have reformatted media in exfat and osx
5. Happens when system is recording or not recording.

Hope this is an easy fix I don't have a B-cam and I need to get back to shooting.

Best,
Christopher

Is it in the recorded footage also?

As far as I can tell, the footage stops recording when the ! exclamation mark comes on.

Yes, just looked at the footage in Resolve and frames drop out just a second or two before it stops recording.

The dropouts could be separate issue from whatever your card speed is.

But the glitches are not in the footage?

Yes,

Resolve throws a media unavailable warning a few frames before the clip ends.

Thanks,

The only "big difference" I can think of between the first Saturday's shooting and today,

I had Blackmagic Raw 12:1 selected instead of Prores 422.

Update

PostSun May 12, 2019 5:24 am

Update:

I set up the G2 on my desk in an air-conditioned room with the two SD cards inside and one 98wh IDX battery and hit record.

The G2 ran through all of one SD card without stopping (30 minutes) and through most of the second card (2 minutes left) then it started throwing frame errors.

At this point I think it's reasonable to assume that there is some problem related to the duration of run-time (heat?) as the camera was hot and the fan on the bottom was running.

Could you try and replicate the issue in 24/25p? I know there was an audio glitch too that only shows up in certain fps.

SD cards get hot when you write a lot of data to them and then they start throtteling, you can't beat physics(with an airconditioner you can). Use Cfast or SSD.

You have two issues.

One is that your media is not fast enough (the red exclamation mark). Your media isn't up to the job.

The bigger one is the image tearing that's in the video you posted. That shouldn't be happening. You should take your camera back to your retailer if it's within their return / swap time OR back to BMD for a warranty repair.

This is not an overheating issue. This is not a runtime issue.

This is an interesting assessment.

Hello,

Thankfully, I've received an RMA from BMD and the camera will be going in tomorrow for evaluation.

Since the initial string of tests, I have:

1. Tested with both battery and mains power.
2. Tested with a brand new SSD drive.

Still having the screen glitch/simultaneous recording crash.

Hope this helps,
Christopher
