Hey Blackmagic, is there any chance we will see an update to URSA Mini 4.6k and 4k cameras with BM Raw, it would be awesome if this is the case.

Regards

Not likely, while the 4K is still available in the EF mount version, the original UM 4.6K has gone EOL, along with the UM Pro ver 1, both being replaced by the new UM Pro Ver 2. Yhe UM 4K may not have a processor that can deal with BRaw, but BM has not said either way, so it’s anyone’s guess.

The UM 4.6 looked like the best candidate in the older Camera line up, and when BRaw was released, BMD did say they were looking into adding BRaw to the original 4.6K Camera. Then it was discontinued, so all bets are now off on the 4.6K getting anymore updates.
Cheers

My thoughts exactly Denny, you can get some deals on the Pro second hand if you’re looking. I was extremely disappointed BMD made many statements that it might come/will come to the older cameras. When I saw an official discontinuation announcement I kinda felt like the writing was officially on the wall.

Very disappointing.

Denny said it best. However, I'll keep holding up hope. The next purchase to me is the G2. The fact is that the UM4.6K has been a great camera and still is. It would be amazing if it could get BRAW. Especially since then it could continue to match the Pro and Pro G2. That to me is the major reason BMD should work on making it happen.

If it doesn't happen by July however, then I would say don't expect it to ever happen. The saddest broken promise from the UM4.6K now goes back 3-years, which is the DNx codec. Still greyed out on the cameras. A real shame. So if we could get one update to eliminate the greyed out codec that would be great. It would be even greater if that update included BRAW.

As far as I know, isn’t the Ursa Broadcast the only one of the Ursa line that records DNxHD, and then only when shooting 1080i50/59.94?
Cheers

Honestly forgot the VA4K recorded DNx codecs. I never really use the VA for recording. It's mainly a monitor and as well I use the scopes. The scopes are so awesome. Either way, I'd rather have in camera recording of BRAW than DNx for sure.

Tim you’re gonna love it once you get that BRAW! Did you pick up a P4K?

It's certainly not the end of the world because I'm still very happy with my 4.6k and it's absolutely the best camera I've ever owned. I also still use the Cinema 2.5k which looks really good along side of the URSA, so I'm very grateful for what Blackmagic has given us. Just wishing for one more update :D

No, I didn’t get a Pocket 4K. I’ll save for the G2 once my car loan is paid off this summer.

It seems, that the Ursa Mini Pro G2 has some major issues. There are videos on youtube, that show faulty units...I dont know. if firmware updates will fix the problems....

I would not go by UTube reviewers and bad camera issues, half the time it’s operator error, the rest are the few exceptions slipping through QC, being used to trash the BM cameras. Same thing happen when the first 4.6K came out, again with the UM Pro and the new Pocket 4K. I never had an issue with getting a bad camera. That said, it does happen, but not a very high percentage.
Cheers

Is Braw that much better than prores? Don’t you have to shoot at 4.6k unless you start cropping the sensor?

BRAW is a ton better than any ProRes codec option. Color temperature and tint are not baked into the image with RAW whereas ProRes it’s baked in. ISO setting is metadata and an adjustment to the gamma curve. Then with the G2 the LUT is embedded in the file or part of the sidecar and can always be disabled in Resolve.
Yes, to use full sensor you have to shoot 4.6K. That’s because RAW is the readout of all the pixels from the sensor. Thus why you crop to a window when shooting other resolutions. It’s because you’re only using those pixels.

Yesterday reverted to shooting ProRes 444 on the URSA Mini 4.6K so my iMac would have an easier time with playback. Fortunately the colour temperature and tint were very accurate and so the video looks quite fine. But the last clip had most lights turned off and was underexposed. Tried to save it by boosting in post but sometimes some artifacts resulted and so I left it dark (to be used for the background when the credits roll so not a problem). I’m expecting BRAW would have come to the rescue.
