Fan noise reduction - sound

PostFri Jun 21, 2013 9:05 am

Is there any way to remove fan noise when using camera mic?
If someone did will be nice to explain us how.

The fan needs to run to keep the sensor cool.

The built in mic is not really for production sound. It's intended for reference sound.

You should be using a decent shotgun or boom mic which will not pickup the fan noise.

I didn't ask what I should but about procedure of the noise reduction if a sound was recorded with the camera mic.

You could use Adobe Audition to help cut down the sound through noise reduction and then maybe use a Parametric EQ, or any EQ and bring back some bass in the person's voice if you're working with dialogue.

If it's just a sound though, you might be able to get away with noise reduction in Audition. You'll have to play with it because in order to get rid of all the noise, you'll probably distort the sound but you can play with it and find the right balance.

And by 'right balance', I mean as good as you can get it with the on camera mic, you probably can't eliminate all the noise

The notch filter in CS6 Audition is really good.

Cool, I haven't tried the notch filter yet. I upgraded about a week ago, so haven't had a lot of time with it, but will have to give it a try.

Your original question was not very clear.

It's expensive, but I highly recommend iZotope RX 2 Advanced in Adobe Audition. This is what I'm currently using to "clean up" audio being recorded straight to the BMC, and it achieves really good results.

But... don't expect to get decent audio from the internal microphone. It's horrible.

Those are great suggestions to answer your question. For future shoots I would highly recommend using an external mic as was suggested earlier..
What I do for general b-roll sound is I attach a Rode videomic to the camera and plug it directly into the camera.. turn off the internal mic and the audio is quite good. and use wireless lav's directly into the camera again for voice recording. a shotgun mic on a boom pole works great as well. I work mostly one-man band.. if you have the luxury of a sound recordist you can run your mic's through a mixer (probably the best workflow)

Remember.. the BMCC does not work with microphones that need phantom power.. so they need to be either self-powered mics.. or run through a mixer.

Impressive but I didn't notice where it acted as a plug-in to Adobe Audition, only that it supported various plug-ins itself. Must have missed something. Thanks.

@Rick You have to enable them in Auditions Audio Plug-in Manager in the Effects Tab
