are you looking for a GOOD pocket 4K viewfinder solution?

PostWed Jul 17, 2019 3:14 pm

I just designed , with the help of my best friend, the best solution for a viewfinder for the Pocket 4K !

We are currently building the first prototype on his 3D printer and we may take some orders if there is some interests

for the moment I just want to know how many peoples are looking for something else than the cheaply made and practically unusable one from australia ?

I should have a complete unit by monday next week

I have an Austrailian loupe viewfinder with a magnetic mount that I bought on EBay for just over $90 USD. I am nearsighted and with contact lenses on I find the 2.8x magnification quite usable in bright sunlight. It doesn't bother me that the Diopter is not adjustable.

I find that my shots are now in focus when they weren't since I can see the screen now.

Why do you say it is unusable? Do you own one?

yes we own one since it was the only one on the market
it doesn't hold properly without some ugly rubber bands even with the magnetic sticker
the diopter was unusable we were lucky to have a glass element to stick on top of the cheap plastic one
the whole diopter assembly move to easily on the shaft too

I bought mine from 3003Nicholas and it has no rubber band. I frequently remove the viewfinder to adjust settings near the edge of the screen, so the magnetic mount is very convenient. The Diopter is firmly glued to the viewfinder and has no shaft. It is exposed however and I use a large Canon lens nag to protect it. Does your design have a way to protect the Diopter from scratches?
I put my P4K (6.5" wide with lens) in a Tundra shoulder bag with an extra 3.15" long lens and I cover that lens with the Viewfinder. I pull both straps tightly to fasten it and have no fear of cracking the sturdy hand laid woven fiberglass viewfinder. I would be concerned about cracking if it was made of thin plastic.

waith until next week to see what we are doing

BTW this is the first thing we did for the 4Kpocket
we had 2 BMPCC HD with wooden bases and we put a wooden cage on the 4K

with did this block to space the camera properly on the base and give it a second life

This is not a Viewfinder, but rather a hood with a loupe, there is a difference. ;)

I was using viewfinder to refer to the items that 3003Nicholas, Matin and ECostConnection advertise in this market niche. If you search EBay using the term "hood" and "Blackmagic" you will not find what you are looking for. You have to use the term "Viewfinder" or "Loupe" to find it.

Although Wikipedia does not yet list these devices in their examples, it states:

"a viewfinder is what the photographer looks through to compose, and, in many cases, to focus the picture."

I frequently shoot with fast lenses with wide aperture settings. I have try multiple shoots while bracketing exposures to get anything useable when I do this. When I try to use the left arrow that is located right up against the edge of the P4K's screen, half of the time it doesn't register and I have to punch it hard with my finger covering part of the surrounding bezel to get it to update the setting.

The frame that Smallrig permanently attaches to the camera for this hood looks like it would frustrate your accessibility to make these exposure changes.

I looked at this hood in April, and posted this on the Smallrig web site:

"The Sun Hood bracket 2299 interferes with a cheese plate. I need a solution like this to focus properly in the daylight. I would prefer it if the top bracket could be removed and then allow it to be quick mounted to a SmallRig Switching Plate Camera Mounting Cheese Plate (Longer Version) - 1598 that is attached to the middle of a cage (2203). I use this plate to attach an Andoer V-Lock Assembly Kit Female V-Dock Male V-Lock Quick Release Plate for V-Mount Battery Quick Release Plate Assembly Kit. I mount a 95Wh V-Mount battery to this to get over 6 hours of operation. The battery overhangs the screen and counterbalances a long heavy lens. The pictured mount for the hood would prevent me from using this solution."

Maybe they will iron things out on the final design and someone will get one to review before Summer is over.

For now I am happy to use my Australian loupe.

Interesting approach. I wonder if that would clear the SSD mount or anything else mounted to the cage.

Here is a picture of the exposure setting that I was referring to. I have a magnetic mount that is attached to the camera with an adhesive here for the loupe.

If the sides can fold inwards and downwards with hinges when not in use, it would be much better. I don't see that. I guess you can easily take it off, and put it back on. It appears to be one piece. It is more durable, but it takes bigger space in the bag.

I've got the Australian Loupe with the magnetic attachment. The magnetic grip is not nearly strong enough , is easily knocked off and would probably blow off in the wind. I attached some stick on Velcro to the top of the Loupe with a mating velcro piece screwed onto the top of the camera. Its a bit bulky and awkward (as any such system would be) when carried around like I do, either with the camera clipped onto a bachpack strap or in a shoulder bag, but its usable.

You're right, it does have a habit of falling off too easily. When it hits the ground it then scratches off the satin black gel coat.

I've started shooting with it pressed tightly against my face so no outside light gets in (try that with your smallrig hood) and I put the eye cup in my mouth when I have to make screen adjustments.

Maybe someone could come up with a stronger magnetic extension for the eye cup that mates to a headband for your face.

People will see that you are a serious cinematographer with a keen eye for framing a shot with your loupe appendage on your face.

Dogs may chase you however.
