[BUG] BMPCC 6K - BLE issue with iris on Sigma & Canon lenses

Hi there,

I just had the chance to test the BMPCC 6K with two old Sigma EFS lenses.
The camera worked completely fine.
Iris on the front wheel, etc. etc.

Then I tried to control the camera via iPad with the official Blackmagic Camera Control app.
Here I found the following issue.

The iris value is not shown correctly.
It displays always f 1.2 even though the lenses were not that bright.

While moving the slider the correct value is shown and the iris in camera is adjusted correctly.
When I stopped touching the slider it jumped instantly to f 1.2 on the display without changing the actual iris in camera.
But if you touch the slider again the iris will go fully open for a moment before going to the designated value.
This causes a weird effect in the recording.
When I stopped touching the the iPad the slider jumped to f 1.2 and so on..

BTW: The third party app on the iPhone was showing the same issue.

Is this a lens incompatibility or an easy to fix flaw in the BLE firmware?

Can anyone confirm the issue or mention lenses that do work fine? :?:

Thank you in advance!
Chris

Hi,

thank you for your answer.
I add a link to your posting:

1) Iris Control. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but it defaults to 1.2 and whenever you change it with the app you start from there. You get the camera to change to the setting you choose, say for example 5.6, but then it goes right back to 1.2 in the app. Same with the iPhone one. So looking at the app I don't know what my Iris setting is at a glance. Now, this isn't an issue for lenses that don't have camera control of the iris, but it would be a welcome improvement. Most of the time I'll be using Cinema Lenses with no iris control from the camera since it's a manual iris controlled by an iris ring.

As I am planing to use active / native lenses with bluetooth remote this a very big issue for me.
Actually I think it can be called a "bug".
Is there an official way to contact BMD in case of bug?

BTW: Which lenses have you tried?

Chris

Glad you found the thread. I was on my phone through the day and not near a computer.

As to the lenses I tried: Sigma Art 18-35 & 50-100, Tokina 11-16, and a Canon 55-250 f4-5.6 kit lens that mostly sits in a drawer. I use the Sigma and Tokina lenses more frequently.

Oh, and Chris I forgot to answer your question about contacting BMD. They see this reported here. So the proper team has likely been alerted.

You can also find a form on the support if I remember right that allows you to send in suggestions for improvements.

Thank you,

I have contacted BMD and also Empire the developers of the third party iPhone app "Bluetooth+" by email.
Let's wait and see.

BTW:
I have also testet the sample code BMD haas published for developers wit the same faulty result.

https://downloads.blackmagicdesign.com/ ... ng_Mac.zip

This file contains the MacOS app "CameraControl.app" as well as the corresponding source code.
Unfortunately I am not a SWIFT developer.

Chris

CANON is also affected...

Hi there,

meanwhile I have testet a second Pocket 6K with the gorgeous Canon 11 - 24mm f 4.0 at an open house of a nice reseller.

The results are the same:
The Blackmagic app is not able to control the iris of EF and EFS lenses properly via Bluetooth.

We need an update...

I have the same problem with Blackmagic Camera Control on my iPad.
I hope this App is further developed soon.
Remote control and being able to see what the camera sees would be a huge improvement for me.

Hi,

thank you for keeping this topic alive.

I am not sure wether BMD will update the iPad app or not (my bug was escalated from EMEA to Australia), but I am very confident that one third party developer will update his app.

Unfortunately there is no working app available in the Appstore at the moment (as far as I know).
I hope that this situation will change soon.

Chris

This week will likely see some major updates for IBC 2019. That starts on the 13th, so any updates that come out for the cameras will likely be on Friday the 13th. Although, who knows if Blackmagic wants to try their luck on Friday the 13th. So maybe Thursday the 12th so they aren't playing with superstition.

Remember they skipped DaVinci Resolve 13...

I hope the Blackmagic Camera Control App will receive further development for the iPhone and iPad.

Since Blackmagic doesn’t comment on future product releases it’s tough to say. All we can do is put the interest in front of them here in the Forums. Let’s see what happens with IBC this weekend.

The official BMD app requires iPad I believe. Bluetooth+ for Blackmagic, One Little Remote, and tRigger are on the iPhone.

This bug should now be resolved with the Bluetooth+ for Blackmagic app.

timbutt2 wrote:Version 1.3.2 was released on November 30th. If you haven't updated update.

This solves a few issues. Especially the IRIS issue we were experiencing. Sadly the official Blackmagic app still hasn't seen an update since July of 2018.

Changes include:
- Fixes a bug where new frame guides introduced in firmware v6.6 would cause the app to crash
- Introduces support for firmware v6.6 new frame guides, frame rates and resolutions
- Fixes issue where iris could not be set on some camera models and firmware versions
- Adds autofocus button to focus page (Pocket 4K only)
- There seems to be a bug in the Pocket 6K firmware that means changing codec from the app is only half possible. You can change between codec variants - e.g. ProRes 422 -> ProRes HQ, but not from ProRes -> BRAW. Hoping Blackmagic fix this in their next firmware release
