Anyone using a 2.5" SSD via USB C?

PostWed Aug 28, 2019 2:49 pm

I'm looking for a storage solution on the BMPCC 4K. I'm looking into using a 1tb SSD and connecting it to the camera with a SATA to USB C cable.

Has anyone tried this? Or have any knowledge on the whether or not this kind of setup withh handle the speed of data from the camera?

The most common SSDs with USB-C are the Samsung T5 and the approved Wise Portable SSD (which comes with a mount for the camera) that I prefer to use.

I use an mSATA 1tb drive in a USB3.1 enclosure but I had to try several different enclosures and MSATA drives to get a combo to work. Stick with the Samsung T5 if you want to be sure.

See my post for info & photos showing how I use a 2.5" SSD with my Pocket 4K cam:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=97434

"... I don't own CFast cards, so I record to an external 960GB 2.5" SSD drive (SanDisk Extreme Pro) connected via an inexpensive USB-C to SATA cable. The drive is in a small plastic box, and this in turn is mounted via Velcro on a very small custom-made cheese plate. Works perfectly. Obviously not as physically robust as using internal SD or CFast, but I already owned the hardware, so the price was right. This combination allows me to record up to 60 fps in every format except 4K DCI Constant Quality Q0 and 4K DCI Constant Bitrate 3:1. I usually shoot using 4K DCI CQ Q5 or Constant Bitrate 8:1 or 5:1 at 60/23.98. YMMV. ..."

The cable I use is similar to this one:
https://www.newegg.com/coboc-usbc-2-5sa ... -_-Product

There are also longer cables available such as:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... 1_2_5.html

As noted above, "YMMV". On that note, see also:

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I’m new to using the BMPCC, and 4K shooting I general, so I appreciate the help!

I use different ssd from sandisk extreme pro (used for production camera 4K, later for ursa and now for pocket4k), to Samsung 860evo.
All allow me to work braw0 at best.
The key is the right box where put them. I use star tech box, esata + usb 3.0 and excellent chipset to manage data rate.
I used them with ursa mini pro and record dual 60p uncompressed dng without problems

I second that Star Tech enclosure. Works perfectly fine with my UMP.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

The sandisk ultra 3d ssd I use on the Blackmagic 2.5k camera works fine. it records in all formats without dropping frames.
