License Braw?

PostSat Sep 14, 2019 3:58 pm

This whole Bayer thing with Red creates a big opportunity for something like Braw to fill the gap.

12:1 or even Q5 on higher models, would be adequate for lower end consumer cameras, action cameras and phones.

More exist expensive equipment could get a more expensive higher datarate license.

A few minor adjustments to Braw would make it much more efficient, such as temporal noise removal and a new compression standard like JPEG xs.

There are already hardware designers supplying this consumer, and pro, spaces, looking for more opportunity as the old hardware taps out. They already have cutting edge design ability in JPEG, and Braw would be a minor adjustment (relatively speaking) which could be put into their chipsets, and designs they license to manufacturers and mobile phone chip set manufacturers. They already have temporal noise reduction designs, and importantly interframe compression techniques. Applying just simple matching of image parts between frames to compress off, could greatly increase average compression of Braw on a phone to the point 8k becomes practical. But for BM they can arrange access to lowcost low powered, low heat chipsets for their cameras based on these designs (beefed up versions, or simply multiple chips placed in parallel on extremely small boards) with a common interface to develop firmware for. They can dramatically reduce their costings and increase their offerings.

As people claim Braw to seem to be a component video format. It could be made to be a more general video compression, producing a down scaled version of full sensor resolution. So, 3k from 8k would be possible.

If the Red patent falls, then BM could instantly add a native Bayer mode.

It's a winning sort of deal.

Your 8k micro could come down below $1000, be a like a compact camera and run much longer.
