Sony Footage Showing Media Offline, H.264

PostSat May 11, 2024 7:01 pm

Hi,

It seems that a lot of people are having this issue. For some reason, when I import or drag footage into Resolve, it shows as Media Offline.

I have the studio version and relinking doesn't work. First I had 18.6 and it didn't work, and then upgraded to 19 Studio Beta, to see if it would fix the issue and nothing. I have an Apple MacBook Pro 2023, M2 Max chip, 32 GB memory.

I saw forums where people have found that unchecking the Decode h.265/h.265 with hardware selection works, but then my footage is all grainy and the performance is garbage. I have the editors keyboard, which came with the studio copy, so the investment isn't cheap. I don't understand how an industry leading program, has this problem.

I'm assuming is h.264 footage that is the problem, seeing that I imported DJI drone footage and it works perfectly.

Is this just me or my system? or is there a fix for this, because I can not use DaVinci Resolve at all, which is pretty disappointing after spending that amount of money on it.

If memory serves, this is actually an Apple issue. Happens with other software as well.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I have no problem with this on premier pro. I had to go back to premier so I wouldn’t get behind on my client projects, it I can load/edit with no problem. Additionally, I’ve seen other threads were windows users are having the same problem.

Are you running under Sonoma? I don't have that issue under Monterey or Ventura.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Studio 18.6.6, MacOS 13.6.7, 2017 iMac, 32 GB, Radeon Pro 580
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM
Sonoma 14.5 with 19b3 (sandbox)

I am running Ventura 13.0. Below are screenshots of the metadata from my FX3 and A74. Not sure what else to do..

Why not 13.6.6?
How many clips are already in the Media Pool? Or none is accepted?
I'm surprised that it happens on a M2 under Ventura as well, since until now most of those affected had an M3 Max under Sonoma.

I see it's probably from a wedding, so can you shoot any short test clip that shows the issue and upload it to a cloud service for testing?

I'm about to revert back to 18.6 but has anybody figured out a solution to this?

There is a known issue on Apple M3 CPUs that is the most frequently-reported manifestation. If you are not on an Apple M3 CPU, it is not the known issue.

We need to know your exact hardware config, OS version, Resolve version (inc'l whether Studio or free version) and codec specifics. If you don't know the codec specifics, get MediaInfo, open the media file, do View>Text and paste that info here. MediaInfo: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download

The known problem is not a generic error that applies to various cases. It is unique to H.264 hardware decoding on Apple Silicon M3 CPUs. Obviously there are other cases that may generate "Media Offline" but those could have many possible causes.

The OP was the only user I have seen that reported this using Sony footage on a non-M3 machine. It was absolutely vital he follow up and provide us more info, but he did not. This is why these problems take so long to correct.
