Feature request, ease of using external drives.

PostWed May 15, 2024 9:39 pm

Attn. Dwaine or any DRS dev, please make it easier to work off of external drives. My work flow is generally off of desktop, but sometimes laptop. I have had issues working off of external drives via cache errors. While some say, "just move all your work files onto your local drive", this is not always tenable. Lack of space for instance. Generally, I have used DRS and it works okay, until I get the cache errors. I read the fixes, but sometimes that is not enough.

The idea of working off external drives is not illogical. People juggle different clients and allocate hard drives (SSD or otherwise) for each of them. This is not a novel idea. Please find a way to make it easier for the user to plug a drive into a lap or desktop and resume the project.

Ideally, whether working off a laptop on the go or desktop, I ought to be able to plug the SSD into respective machines and resume working. My OS is primarily Linux, but this issue is also on WindowsOS.

Thanks.

I think what you're really saying is, "I don't know how to move my session back and forth from a laptop to my desktop system."

It can be done and it IS easy if you follow all the rules. You have to make sure all the paths are set correctly, and you have to manually relink all the footage to the new drive names. Other than that, it basically takes under a minute.

We bounce sessions back and forth all the time to other systems, and it's not that hard. The keys to remember are:

Project Settings / Master Settings
set "Working Folders" for Proxy, Cache & Gallery to new drive(s).

User Settings / System
set Media Storage Locations to include all attached drives
and make sure first drive is your Gallery Stills/Cache drive.

You may have to exit and relaunch Resolve in order for this to change, but it can be done.

All of this is covered in the manual and in the basic training for Resolve Color and Editing.

@Marc Wielage,

"User Settings / System" <----Do you mean top tab, 'DaVinci Resolve', then 'media storage' under 'system' where the path to the drive in question is located?

The operating system is in charge of external drives.

Davinci shouldn't be concerned at all with the type of storage media.

@SteveW "Davinci shouldn't be concerned at all with the type of storage media."

That's right. You don't need storage media for videos therefore, why would there be a need for the software to access them. So ease of access is really just a moot request.

@marc wielage

Okay, that seems to have gotten rid of the errors, thanks.

I was following this: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=161448

And saw it was not helping much. Your response is better.

But it is better to get this sorted in one area rather than having to go to two spots. It can always be easier.

Again, it takes one minute to do. It's not that hard and it's not that time-consuming -- we do it all the time.

Where it gets complicated is when the drive name changes or you're working with an OS like Windows where forcing a static drive name is a little tricky.
