Resolve Studio no longer opens on MacOS

PostWed May 15, 2024 9:47 pm

Hello, what type of support is available for users with a license?

Since last month, Resolve stopped opening and directly crashes after the splash screen.
I had version 18.6.6 installed when it started happening. And after attempting to launch the application a few times, I uninstalled it and tried Resolve 19 Beta 1, with the same result of course. Eventually I gave up and uninstalled it.

When Resolve 19 Beta 2 was released, I decided to give the installer a try, and still didn't work. So I uninstalled it, wiped the Libraries, and re-installed 18.6.6 followed by my activation key. Once again the application crashed. So here I am.

Before I erased the Blackmagic folders from my Libraries, I saved a "crash_archive.txt" and generated the logs.
Looking at my notes, the crashes started shortly after the machine was updated to Sonoma 14.4.1
I am unable to remain on any "stable" MacOS version due to corporate policy.

The machine specifications: M2 Max, 96GB ram, 3456×2234 display, Sonoma 14.4.1, almost 2TB of free space.

I wanted to wipe my libraries again to try the free version of Resolve, but I think I'll have the same result.

Any ideas?

Does Resolve use Java? https://support.apple.com/en-us/109035

Also, I found out that I'm unable to submit the crash report (corporate network policy). After registration, does Resolve Studio need to occasionally contact Blackmagic servers to continue launching/working? I'm just wondering about possible causes for these crashes.

Not having any issue with this. I would suspect something on your system causing it, like a plugin or other software.

Hi there.

The FAQ is a good start which guide you on what you need to do.
Without proper logs there's basically no chance on getting good help.

And, yes, with a key your machine will contact BM from time to time. If that is against IT policy, you should rather buy the dongle.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Your corporate had policy to stay on unstable version of Os?
Or IT section is too lazy to maintain Os version and decide to use it like excuse…
I frequently met too much lazy technicians to believe it. I told for you obviously.

Anyway no problem here with this Os, resolve studio and some plugins like neat video, dehencaer and some time in pixels plugins.

Now is a It problem be cause they change something to broke resolve working.
Ps I met also too much technicians that told there is not user management or server management that mess software setup, and later I found it.

I am having exactly the same issue - can't open Resolve 19 or 18.6 on my mac M2 studio. It freezes on opening, or when it gets to the project page. I don't know how to resolve it. I'm just a private user (No iT dept)
Please help - I can't get to nay of my work. I gcan't generate any crash logs as the system freezes before I get there.

Look for descriptions by Dwaine on how to kill your preferences, they might be damaged.

Edit, found it:
"Fortunately, there is a backup file that is OK. We just need to make a copy of that and rename it.
These files are located in a hidden folder, so we need to make hidden folders and files visible in Finder. To do that, do the following:
Press Command + Shift + . (period) to make the hidden files and folders appear.
Once you've done that, in Finder navigate to this folder:
/Users/YOU/Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve
Right click the config.dat file and select Move to Trash
Then right click the config.dat.bak file and select Duplicate
Then right click the new config.dat.bak copy file and select Rename and rename the file config.dat
Now Resolve should launch."

If that doesn't help, I'd suggest a fresh install on a 'sandbox' system – a separate bootable disk. Only MacOS and DR there, that way you can exclude if anything is 'colliding' with DR.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
