M4 iPad Pro - 11" or 13"?

PostFri May 17, 2024 2:13 am

Those of you who run Resolve on an iPad, I plan to pick up the newest wundertablet from Apple and was wondering what your experiences are regarding the sizes.

Looking at both in the Apple store, the 11" seems to have closer to a widescreen aspect ratio, very slim and easy to tuck away in a backpack or bag. The 13" seems almost reminiscent of the old 4:3 monitors, but surprisingly felt to be about the same weight as the smaller one. Apparently there's only about a 50-70g difference.

I wonder how Resolve will look and act, and expect the larger one will probably be the better bet for such a busy ("feature rich" ;) ) interface. I'm an audio guy, so I'm not as focused on the image or editing capabilities, but it's nice to be able to see the video that accompanies the audio.

I've only used an iPad for a few weeks before, bought an iPad Air in 2022, used it as a dedicated monitoring monitor as well as for office tasks until my son decided he needed it more for his schoolwork. Haven't seen it since! :D

Thoughts?

I'd recommend the 13", at least the 1TB storage (so you get 16GB RAM), and the Pencil; and if you are grading, get the Nano Texture Glass option.

Thanks Peter for the reply.

Pencil was on my list, definitely, and the 1TB models to get the 16GB of RAM.

I looked at the Nano glass and wondered how hard it will be to keep it clean. I see it offers slightly better specs (contrast), less glare, but I won't be grading on it, and as an audio person don't expect to need the very last bit of graphics performance.

Won't it pick up smudges and fingermarks much easier than the glossy version, and be harder to clean?

You might be correct re screen.. i was thinking color...

and yes, the 16GB ram is highly recommended, thus the 1TB as you said.
I'll update my post so its clear for others who just read that far.

Second those 16 GB and the larger screen. I was already very impressed when testing the app last year on M2, it must be such a beast with M4:

(Sorry, in German. I suggest DeepL for translation).
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

The weight difference between the 11" (444g) and 13" (576g) models is 132 grams according to the specs comparison page. The older 12.9" is 682g.

The two new models appear identical in most respects apart from size and weight. The amount of memory depends directly in both cases on the amount of storage according to the Apple Store. The 1 and 2TB models have 16GB of memory and the smaller capacity versions have 8GB. This is the critical question for me as I want something really light and portable but with the 16GB memory. I doubt I will be grading directly on it too much but I intend to use it primarily when travelling to download video and stills from camera and examine in detail so I can cull as I go along and back up onto external SSDs.

Not something I've checked as yet but I am presuming it will be possible to attach an external monitor either by USB-C or HDMI.

I put in an order for the 13" 1TB version with the regular screen.

Will let you know how it works when it arrives.

Thanks for the input and advice!

I went for the top end 13” 2TB Nano.. I tend to keep devices a long time.. I upgraded from a 2015 IPad Pro .. I really like the Nano screen and have both it and a gloss one here to evaluate.. Overall the Nano wins out. I find I dont miss the “wet “ look of the glossy. All the detail etc is still there if you compare side by side.. maybe a slight loss of contrast but really still looks great!

DaVinci REsolve seems to work almost the same as the desk top version.. So far anyway. Im going to start learning to dig deeper into editing and color going forward

Is 16 GB of memory really required for smooth Resolve performance on iPad? I'm also debating 11" vs 13".

I already have a 16" M1 Macbook Pro as my main editing machine. Looking to get an iPad as a complimentary piece/travel machine to do some very light edits/initial rough cuts and some grading (I really like the idea of editing the audio on the iPad with the pencil). I had made my mind up on the 13", but now I'm having second thoughts. If it's supposed to be a travel device and not a laptop replacement, I feel the 11" suits that purpose better. Especially for content consumption in bed, etc. The weight of the 13" doesn't bother me, just the size of it for everyday life seems a bit much.

To upgrade from 512 GB to 1 TB and get 16 GB of memory is an extra $700 in Australia. Add that ontop of an extra $500 going from 11" to 13", it's a tough pill to swallow for a complimentary/travel device.

Would 11" M4 iPad Pro with 512 GB be good enough for rough edits and some grading?

I would totally avoid that nano texture and do the standard glass grading or not. 13” only way to go.

13 standard glass 2tb

PostFri May 31, 2024 4:11 pm

i bought the 13 2tb standard glass because i bought the new color wheel thingy. ive already got the 2024 mbp 16 with 8tb 128gb but i want to edit on the ipad as well and want to keep as much as i can on internal storage, so i went with the 2tb. i've always had the larger ipad so this one does not feel any different. i can carry it, in its magic keyboard case with pencil, mbp, color wheel, speed editor, mpc live ii ( look it if you care) and full size headphones al in my backpack.

my nod is for standard glass. the oled is really gorgeous and the nano takes some of that away. if you were going to draw on it maybe but the standard glass is my recommendation.
