XML Bugs on version 11.2.1 Lite

PostWed Mar 04, 2015 8:06 am

I'm trying to find help here. Blackmagic don't answer to my questions from days.

I tried with 7 Macs and 9 different projects. With the latest version of Resolve Lite, is impossible to get a roundtrip with Premiere Pro or FCPX.
The serious problem is on Premiere Pro.

The XML exported from FCPX or Premiere Pro don't link to the original clips inside Resolve. If you try to force manually the linking, you can obtain success with the FCPX XML searching inside the original media folder inside the FCPX Library. If you try to relink the original clips used in Premiere Pro, there's no way.
After the grading of the project edited in FCPX, the XML generated by Resolve doesn't import graded clips inside FCPX Library Browser, but only in the timeline.

They've added a roundtrip support for Avid, but they've broken the compatibility with FCPX and Premiere.

Can you define the exact version of FCPX and PPro, and your OS. Even publish a link to your XML.
Someone might be able to assist with the extra info.

I can't post url!!! I get this message when I try.

I spoke about the latest versions of FCPX and PPro.
I downgraded to version 11.1.3. Now I'm able to load the XML correctly, but the XML generated by Resolve doesn't work in Premiere.
I'll try to downgrade to other versions...

Same error if I downgrade further. I've now installed version 11.1.1. Earlier versions are not compatible with OS X Yosemite.
If I was able to upload picture here. I could provide screenshots step by step.

I've not received further informations or help from the Blackmagic Design support.

I'm very very frustrated about the support quality that is changed in few months.
This is my last email that I wrote to the support:

Hello.
I lost the count of how many times I wrote you about the same XML problems in DaVinci Resolve.
It's clear that something is changed in the policy of the Customer Support. Sometimes ago I always received answers about my questions and very very helpful.
I've a big problem with the XML roundtrip and I'm unable to continue my work.
I know that the lite version is free, but I paid for it buying a Pocket Cinema Camera. I'm a Blackmagic customer however.

I wrote many many emails explaining my problem and the answer where other questions (just answered before) or best known procedures, the same I do every time.

I can accept that there's no solution, that is a bug not yet solved, but I would like to receive an answer.

Possibly the reason you are having trouble with support is that no one else is reporting this problem. Unless you make the information requested (FCP / Premiere versions, OS version) and the XML available, it is impossible to help since no one else seems to be experiencing this issue.

I have successfully done at least 4 Premiere Pro round trips using XML in Resolve 11.2.1. No one I know uses FCPX, so haven't had a chance to test that.

Here is how you post a url link:

click on the BBCode URL button just above the text entry part of the reply window. you will be able to insert your url address between the BBCode

I can present you 5 people with the same problem with the latest version of Premiere Pro CC and Resolve LITE (I don't know if it work on the other version of Resolve).

Here are the screenshot with my procedure. I've no idea what's wrong. It's the same procedure I always used.

The FCPX behaviour you describe is normal. When you import the Resolve generated XML file into FCPX, you will see only the timeline with the new graded media, not individual clips in the FCPX event. I will test Premiere Pro to see if you have a workflow issue.

I had no issues with Premiere Pro CC round trip.
I think you have a workflow issue. Re-read the manual to be certain you have used the correct workflow for doing a round trip. Remember that you must not modify your timeline if doing a round trip and you must select the round trip preset in the Deliver page before changing your output settings for final render output.

Peter, I wrote a manual about Resolve!
If you don't see anything wrong in my procedure, this mean that is not wrong.
The procedure I use is always the same. I don't know why Blackmagic don't trust me. There's a lot of people with the same problem here, in Italy. We are talking about it in a Facebook page about Blackmagic products.

The problem exist. Why deny it?

Perhaps it is an Italian localization issue with Resolve? Definitely doesn't happen in English. Like I said, I've done many Premiere round trips with 11.2.1 and never had this issue, and don't know of any others (besides yours).

Hi Guido,

you did not really detail your workflow. The screenshots don't show enough to see if there are any steps in your workflow which may be causing the issue. I think it's fair to say that if the issue can't be replicated by others in a consistent way, then you may need to do a bit more research into your particular setup to see if there are any corrupted clips or added filters or other unusual things that may be causing the error.
I have had individual clips cause failures in FCPX to Resolve round trips. I have also had issues with the XML implementation in Premiere, which is based on FCP7 XML but not exactly the same.
But as I posted previously, I don't get the error that you are experiencing. I do not deny that it is happening.
I'm using Resolve Lite.

Where did you generate the XML for coming back to Premiere Pro? And how?
BM wrote me that the Deliver Page can't export an FCP7 XML, but only .fcpxml. For me it's a news, because for years I generated FCP7 XML from the Deliver Page, as referred in Resolve Manual and many video tutorials.

I have done some tests and I think the issue is with Premiere. I can import the Resolve generated fcpxml files into FCPX perfectly.
However I have experienced the same issue you describe when trying to re-import the original XML file into Premiere, which was generated by Premiere. It is also causing a corruption of my project.

To answer your question;
I used the older round trip method (after rendering) to export the XML for Premiere, from the edit page.

Some people who have issues with Premiere XML files have reported using FCP7 as an XML conversion tool to prepare the XML file for Premiere. I have not tried this yet.

So, I've to open the XML generated in the Edit Page with FCP7 and than export again the XML?

Can you explain what you mean ? (export XML from File Menu instead of Deliver page, is that's "the older" trick ?)

Yes. The only problem is that I've not FCP7.

This may be a related problem, I upgraded to 11.2.1 lite and also lost premiere roundtrip, but only with cs6 - luckily my colleague has a cc edition of PP and the XML worked, from there we could export another XML to get to CS6.

Yesterday, the Roundtrip worked. I created a timeline with only ProRes 422 clips inside Premiere Pro. I exported in Resolve the XML from the Edit Page and rendered only the clips without choosing an Easy Setup. Premiere imported all correctly.
Maybe is a codec problem...
I tried to work with ProRes, RAW CinemaDNG from BMPCC and XAVC-S.

XAVC-S is quite new, it could be the problem.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

And a timeline mixed with ProRes and CinemaDNG?
