Nomenclature?

PostThu Mar 23, 2017 5:29 pm

if I have an offline and I want to do a split in teh edit page, I right click and I have options..

now, a
[top/bottom] split is done with an horizontal line
[left/right] is done with a vertical line

in the menu a [vertical wipe] generate a [top/bottom] split and vice-versa.

it seems wrong. if i do a "vertical wipe" I'm expecting to do a vertical line and therefore getting a left/right split.

Am I the only one confused by it?

guess its all in how our minds think / process things. To me a Vertical wipe naturally means horz line with the wipe effect being able to move vertically.

FWIW - I started my stills career shooting Nikon , but it always felt backwards for me, moved to Canon and things turned the right way for me.

Horizontal means left-right, vertical top-bottom for me.
If you say horizontal movement- why do you expect? Movement from top-bottom or left-right?

It's down to the logic- not sure if any is more or less correct.

to me a [vertical wipe] is that: a vertical line that wipes... hence making a left/right split.

It might be that English is not my first language....

They probably took it from vertical resolution (measured horizontally) vs. horizontal resolution (measured vertically). I agree with Walter: a vertical wipe should wipe vertically.

Remember that down under, water in the drain goes counter-clockwise, so I'm guessing it's related to that phenomena.

to me, a horizontal wipe is a wipe that has a horizontal movement. makes perfect grammatical sense. if the line would be called 'wiper', i would agree with OP

it already does.

the name of the wipe correctly and logically refers to how the wipe behaves, not the line needed to get it there.
