I have to admit using the mouse more than I imagine many others do, but I find not being able to toggle the play button is a pain. So many players now transform into a pause symbol then back to play. It's almost anachronistic that it doesn't in Resolve. Hitting the space bar then again to play has become so unintuitive. Any chance of implementation or am I unleashing a torrent of disagreement?
I've always been used to working with J-K-L controls. It works in almost all video software. In Davinci Resolve, in all tabs.

The problem with J, K, L in Resolve is that you can't slow down. You can only speed up, stop or change direction. It makes it just about impossible to use J, K, L to stop exactly where you want to.

You can make slow (constant) by holding the K key pressed and then press J or L. but it is certainly not worth a control surface.

They have improved this quite a bit in Resolve 14. Try it.

How do you slow down with Resolve 14?

You mean in an Edit mode? K+J = slo-mo backward, K+L = slo-mo forwards.
If you mean slow down a clip, select the clip on the Edit page, then right click to bring up the Change Speed options. Pp. 431-441 of the 12.5 manual covers this well.

In addition, there is the slow-mo up. Thanks to Marc.

I meant while running at say 3x (having pressed the L key thrice), how does one drop back down to 2x without first stopping (K) and then hitting L twice?
I think this is what Peter meant when he said you can't slow down, only change direction.

I just hit K or spacebar to momentarily stop, then immediately rehit the JKL buttons as needed. I don't even think about it. To me, this is a very, very trivial problem.

To be honest, I find it to be a HUGE pain in the @$$. (It's like trying to drive a car whose gas pedal can only go downwards. So the only way to slow down is to throw it in park, halt to a complete stop, and then press down on the gas pedal again.)
And it makes JKL trimming essentially unusable.

The more you can keep your hands off the QUERTY keyboard, the faster you can work as a colorist. If you're editing, then that's a different situation.
I guess you don't consider the Tangent Wave a control surface then.

I just want to add that both Media Composer and Premiere have the ability to drop down to a lower speed with J K L.
