DaVinci Resolve Lite resulting in White Static

PostWed Mar 13, 2013 6:15 pm

Hello Folks,

First time here. I recently started having some weird stuff going down in DaVinci Resolve. However, this one takes the cake. After some searching over the last few days, I decided to hit up the forum.

Occasionally, I get this white static screen in place of where my video would be. This happens in different places, and rebooting sometimes results in a fix. Sometimes it shows right when I am selecting the project, and other times randomly, but lately at the very END of an export of some interview footage.

Footage is on an External 7200RPM 500GB LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 drive.

My computer specs:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro10,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.7 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP101.00EE.B03
SMC Version (system): 2.3f32

You gave us all the specs except the important ones.

What version of OS X are you running?

What graphics processor(s) does your system have?

Do you have Mac System Preferences / Energy Saver / Automatic Graphics Switching unchecked? It needs to be unchecked.

My Graphic Card switching is obviously on because I haven't changed it since I got this laptop (it's rather new). That does however make a ton of sense. I'll install an app to take care of that. gfxCardStatus (http://gfx.io/)

Here's the rest of the system information you requested:

OS X 10.8.2

Graphic/Displays:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M
Intel HD Graphics 4000

I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for your help Dwaine!

You should not need to install an app. Just uncheck the Automatic Graphics Switching checkbox in Energy Saver.

That said, I've seen MBP users talking about using a third party app to force the NVIDIA graphics to always be used. Is there some advantage to using such an app, over changing the setting in Energy Saver?

Yeah. You can switch the card manually, and/or monitor which graphic card is being used when automatically being chosen. I figure sometimes I may actually want to go low power graphic card to save battery if I am emailing from a coffee shop or something.

It sounds like you are running out of GPU RAM. Make sure you don't have other apps open in the background, including apps like Safari, etc. They use up a lot of the GPU RAM.

I usually run with no other applications running. When I switched so my computer wouldn't change GPU the problem seems to have gone away. My guess is that I was running out of GPU because it was switching. :D
