LUT menus are frustrating

PostWed Aug 02, 2017 7:28 am

The only way that I know to apply a LUT to a node is right click on the node and navigate LUT menu. I added my personal LUTs so I have to navigate a menu with at least 3 levels of nesting (my LUTs are organized in directories). I don't know if there is some better way but navigating these menus is really frustrating (also a little bit bugged according to me) and there is no fast way to cycle through all LUTs of a given folder.

As result if I don't know exactly which LUT to apply, using LUTs is a very bad experience. Can you add a plugin to apply LUTs and fast cycle through one or more LUT folder? I think it would really improve user experience.

Kind Regards,
Alessandro

+1 of some sort of fast cycling. Diving 3 menus down for new LUTs takes too much time.

I find navigating sub menus in Resolve to be rather flimsy, often the submenu collapses unintentionally, it is annoying. This problem exists in release 12 and has not improved in release 14.

An example where sub menus work more solidly is the Adobe tools.

So true. Selecting a LUT seems to require a high precision gaming mouse and even then it often takes me a few attempts to click on it without the menu collapsing.

It's so tedious that I typically don't bother experimenting with LUTs and I've stopped buying LUT packs since I don't use them.

Its crazy they have not implemented a better lut selection process, specially when they have the gallery view which would work just fine for LUTs. Maybe the can let us batch convert LUTs to power grades and attach a reference image. I wish they could reverse a lut to nodes instead.

Agreed, I have a hard time scrolling through all the ImpulZ LUTs. Sometimes when I'm in a subfolder, it will collapse really quickly and flip to the next parent folder.

For example, I'm trying to select

28 Slog2 -> Fuji Superia

but it will somehow switch parent folders, without me noticing, so I end up selecting:

29 Cine4 -> Fuji Superia

It would definitely be nice to have this functionality natively within Resolve, but in the meantime, you all may find the OFX plugin LUT Gallery helpful.

I think the best workaround is to create PowerGrade folders for the different LUT categories, apply each LUT as a base grade and grab still. Sound tedious to set up, but then you can use Split Screen to see the LUT or LUTs applied.

That said, it's more of a workaround than reason not to add better LUT browsing--which would be nice to have.

Totally! It makes me not want to use LUTS on Davinci because it is so slow. Small project, no big deal. Big project with various types of grades per segment, big deal.

I think a better method is to avoid LUTs whenever possible, but that's me.

If you insist on using LUTs, I think Peter's idea above works very well: create a new PowerGrade folder, then store one still with a designated LUT in it, and label each one so you know what they are. Then, if you need to compare them, you can always view a side-by-side comparison by choosing several PowerGrade stills, then right-click in the View menu and choose "Gallery Grades." This will allow you to preview what effect the PowerGrade will have on the source material.

What I usually prefer to do is to come up with a custom PowerGrade (not a LUT) that provides a specific look completely based on the material given to me. This has to be prepped prior to the client coming in, but usually I can rustle up 5 or 6 different looks, let the client look at them, and then we work out which one is most appropriate for the project... or at least which one gets us kind of in the ballpark.

Note that (as always) I don't have a problem with Technical LUTs designed for a specific purpose, or Custom LUTs created for a specific project. Those can work with a lot more precision than an off-shelf LUT that claims to provide a specific look.

+1 for a better LUT-MENU!

There are also some external batch-previewer.
But once found a look i like, i have to use the frustrating resolve-menu to select my lut.
And OFTEN the menu collapses.
Id love to use the keyboard´s arrow-keys to drive through my luts-list ;)

Beware. OpenCL only !!

Funny, seller states that you have to change your resolve setting to OpenCL as it is "just as fast as cuda "
Whaaaahahahahahahahahahaha.
Yeah sure it is. (for me , 2GTX980TI factor 2-3 slower last time i checked on opencl not including the render issues on opencl)

Probably more targeted to FCP users where that statement makes sense, but for resolve..... :lol:

Yes thats right - just tested it and openCL is much slower :o .
Its also buggy, as im not able to load luts from resolve´s luts-directory.
But the same files from another folder on another drive works... after generating some thumbnails resolve crashs.
Needs some more development - but hopefully BMD is going to improve luts-handling internaly ;)

I think the tool does what it does very well as far as i can see. So if they are smart they create a version also for Cuda to create a larger potential customer base.
If they wait too long i bet BM comes up with an internal LUT explorer. Its a matter of time.

I uninstalled:
no CUDA
like Dennis: not able to load luts from resolve's luts-directory
When changing LUT, no change in the control screen behind a BMD card.
Frustrating and pity.

The company that sells the LUT Gallery is Color Grading Central LLC right?

On their front page they use the ACES Product Partner logo:
https://www.colorgradingcentral.com/

However I could not find Color Grading Central in the list of ACES product partners:
http://acescentral.com/t/meet-the-product-partners/101

So either the information on their website or on ACES central is incorrect or out of date.

My guess would be that ACES site looks out of date (2016 post).
They seem legit so far and have been around for a while. No reason to suggest otherwise . Or do you have other info that suggests this ?

No suggestions implied, but I think if we take those logos seriously, and I try to do that, then it should be sorted out either on the ACES site or on the ColorGradingCentral site.

Looking at the partners it seems to me a rather select group of specialists who, by the way, are also listed on the oscars.org front page under the Partners tab:

Hmm, interesting indeed. The partner list seems indeed very specific and large companies for which it makes somehow sense they are part of the partner program. Now sure with what this company qualifies . It cant be for just selling LUTS . They are also apparently BM Davinci Resolve training partner, but see no certified courses on offer.
But i always give the benefit of the doubt and see nothing bad in the products of services they "do" offer on the site.
You could always if you have doubts just mail the guys.

Good point to be aware of indeed. LUT's probably survive the apocalypse :mrgreen: , but be very carefull with your painstakingly created powergrades. They are vastly more flexible and clean but do require extra care when upgrading.
I tend to regularly export powergrades somewhere separate from all normal backups etc. Then i can always just reimport into a new database (as limited to a single database, while luts are cross DB) or new version.

i keep a constantly updated project called "powergrades_xx_201x",

move all powergrades into the project bin, save a DRP with stills and LUTS,

then copy all power grades back into the powergrade bin they came from

you then only need to import the project and use the explorer window to grab the saved powergrades as needed

i use this both to backup and to access my powergrades when i'm frelanceing

They did on a GUI change as big as what we went through on 12.5 -> 14. As luck would have it, I routinely export my PowerGrades as stills to folders for freelance projects where I have to work on the client's systems. I embed the name of the PowerGrade in the still so it's easy for me to figure out at a glance what they are:

Image

I typically have four or five different PowerGrade libraries, each with things I've kept over the years for different projects. I have to weed through them to throw out the things that aren't repeatable, but one overall look or effect will usually do the job. MotionVFX is one company that sells some prefab PowerGrades ("MLooks"), and a few of them are worthwhile.

Hey,
Just wanted to post my 2 cts on this very interesting topic...

1/ I also find the LUT gallery dvpt very weird (it works, it doesn't, lots of 404 pages etc etc). However, I admit I'm also very interested in the principle (and lazy to convert dozens of luts into PowerGrades too);

2/ Consequently, maybe because my patience is too limited (I confess), I think BMD will do the trick one of these days, because this part or Resolve is a great contribution to efficiency when at work;

3/ Talking about LUTs, whose job - we all know - has been routed out to make looks instead of "translations", I also think powergrades are the real format to use to achieve looks and I second Marc when he writes about Motionvfx relevant examples;

4/ In the end, I think (this is not what I want but it's my prediction) LUT Gallery will be driven to obsolescence by BMD making it inside Resolve, just as Color Finale was when Apple released dozens of wheels in their last FCPX
