360 VR edit and grade possible?

PostFri Feb 16, 2018 3:15 pm

Hello all,

In Davinci Resolve 14.0.0.078 is it possible to edit and grade 360 video footage? I have imported 360 video footage as flat/equirectangular and applied a simple edit of removing the beginning, rendered out in the correct format but only to find that the removed part then appears as a removed slice in the 360 sphere? Would appreciate advice on what I may be doing incorrectly or whether Davinci can not be used for such (hope it can as just purchased it)?

Your timeline or export probably didn't match your source footage resolution/aspect.

Protip: If you're buying a program for a specific feature then make sure it has the feature set before buying it. Or in the case of Resolve: Try the free version first.

Make sure you set correct project size and aspect to square pixels (and that you rendered format can handle it. Don't use e.g. DNxHD. Use ProRes, Cineform , DNxHR.
For Resolve those 360 files are just like normal ones.

There are OFX to treat the VR360. For example BCC OFX 11 VR Reorient
OK it's an inverse of a flattened 360 VR that I reverse .... but I do not have a RAW 360 VR clip: This is the first time I test ... . it's not my daily)

There is still no way of hooking up VR headset and having realtime preview (with full head tracking etc) like you can do in Scratch (and Nuke now I think).

I've been using the latest Resolve 14 to grade 8K mono footage from our 6-camera VR rig. The major issues are:

1) No headset review
2) GPU out of memory issue, and
3) No stereo tool for Tob/Bottom format which is quickly becoming the default stereo VR 3D 360 format (youtube/Vimeo/Oculus/Steam/Pixvana/Facebook all require this format now).

You could grade L/R channels separately and combine them in Nuke render final, but getting through Resolve with 6k/8k footage and no GPU error is tedious. We're using dual 1080ti's with 12Gb mem on each and we error out after 2 nodes no matter what they are.

Hey David.

Not a perfect solution but helps a bit. Did you check Hitfilm's plugin for 360? its part of the free Ignite Express pack that works with Resolve. Gives you X Y Z rotations and scaling for 360 footage.

So how / what tooling did you use for Nadir patch (removal)?
I assume you used some other tool to stitch? Did you edit in Resolve?
What codec did you find ideal and were you able to color grade without artifacts across the 0deg/360deg stitch line created by equirectangular format? Did you use Fusion for anything at all?
It is nice to see VR / 360 video support on all the Blackmagic Resolve Marketing flyers - but is anyone actually using it with any VR footage? No luck getting info or even the simplest worked example from Blackmagic
Doing from scratch (no pun intended ;) but seems completely unsupported except by the marketing department.

Have a look at Boris Continuum complete, they advertise 360 degree and the plug-ins work in Resolve.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Will anyone at Blackmagic respond with roadmap for useable 3D VR 360 tooling? Or possibly add the features to an update? At least Nadir removal and either over under support or maybe mapping of color grade from left to the right if synced sequences. Otherwise all work has to be done in Premiere :(

Marketing departments always live in its own world, where everything is supported and works perfectly :)
Resolve atm has no real VR support- simple as this, but there is a way to get realtime headset preview for grading session. I made such a workflow for Nuke 3 years ago when VR tools were very limited. Use "power" of SDI and abilities of live grading in some tools :D
