Linux CentOS 7 - Resolve 15.2.3/4 Not rendering

PostFri Feb 15, 2019 4:57 pm

Hi All,
Simply I cannot render and output any clips on Resolve 15.2.3/4.
I tried it on CentOS 7 and on latest Debian flavours (Ubundu/Mint etc..) with similar results.

I've described the problem on this YouTube video
. I edited that video using Resolve 15.2.3 on Windows 10 but I cannot do it on Linux with the same hardware. Please watch the full video to understand the problem - only 4 mins long.

A simple test to export a few seconds of ProRes video downloaded from video sample site because none of my converted videos worked. I can edit long videos on Windows 10 (same hardware) and export to any available format without any issues. On Linux, I cannot output anything.

My machine's full hardware spec here https://sites.google.com/view/linux-resolve-spec.

I added another 16GB so the total is 32GB recommended memory. Still, I could not output a one simple few seconds video on Linux. I am pretty sure it is nothing to do with the hardware.
I wanted to move away from Windows 10, until I have a complete working editing system on Linux, I could not move.

Hi.

Who told you that should be possible?
The Linux version is different to the Windows version. It only support 1 or 2 Linux distributions.

Please read and follow the advises giving in this link for both Linux and hardware: Painless install on Linux Centos 7

Hi Carsten,
Thank you for the response but pardon my ignorance, I don't think I understood your comment.
Resolve 15.2.3/4 requirement says the following for Linux CentOS:
-CentOS 6.8
-32 GB of system memory is recommended minimum
-Blackmagic Design Desktop Video version 10.4.1 or later
-NVIDIA/AMD Driver version – As required by your GPU
-RED Rocket-X Driver 2.1.34.0 and Firmware 1.4.22.18 or later
-RED Rocket Driver 2.1.23.0 and Firmware 1.1.18.0 or later

I don't have the Red Rocket Driver, I don't think that is important as I am not doing anything with Red.
As required, I have the rest. My GTX 560Ti is not the fastest, but I don't believe that is the problem. I have installed the Nvidia driver, not the Nouveau driver.

If I am missing any hardware, can you please kindly point me what am I missing? The entire hardware configuration list is on my first post. Yesterday I added the extra 16GB to make the minimum 32GB requirement.

Thank You

PS: All working disks are local SSD disks.

Resolve records logs in the directory it is installed. Have you examined those already? :)

I did but I couldn't spot anything related to the problem. I can see some UI errors.

Too long to paste here. Here is the link for the whole loghttps://sites.google.com/view/linux-resolve-spec/resolve-log , if anyone can spot anything :)

I take it you have noticed that the clip metadata tells that your sample file is 25 fps file? Trying to render it as 23.967 might cause problems... Have you tried just editing and rendering 25 fps?

Thank you for the response.

Yes, already I tried all the FPS combinations.

Anyways... Just tried the timeline and the sample clip to be 25fps with no success. :(

Also, just I tried to generate optimized media for the sample clip and that didn't work either - it was stuck on 1% - it didn't move.

Hi.

I normally write that 2 GB or smaller of vRam for HD in the Graphics Card is not recommended.

Anton

For your rendering issue, could you post a link to your log archive as explained here (under Submitting diagnostic logs)? Please also check if rendering to a codec other than DNX works - we recommend you try rendering to DPX or CineForm to see if your issue is isolated to that one codec.

It might also be a good idea to review your hardware setup - This URL gives you links to the hardware configuration guide and lists the graphics card requirements for DaVinci Resolve version 15. Both the AMD processor and the GeForce 560 graphics cards seem very underpowered for the job, and the GeForce 560 Ti does not support Cuda 3.0.

Windows will share ram to the GPU to provide a bigger vram space. I don't know if Linux does that to help inadequate gpus.

Hi.

This is not the way I until now understand it. So may be it is something new. Do you have a link with more information?

I believe that's only for Intel and some recent AMD GPU:s, and it's not performed by the operating system. Haven't seen any Nvidia card do that ever.

In any case it would be quite slow.

Hi All,
Thank you for everyone took the time to have a look at this issue.
I understand my GPU is under powered. I worked on very lengthy complex work flow on Adobe with the same hardware so I assumed the spec should be fine for small work on Davinci Resolve. My plan to switch to Resolve from Adobe and if I could ditch Windows that would be a huge benefit for me - I don't have to run two operating systems (hmm I may need it for the PhotoShop).
Anyway, so far Resolve Windows version convinced me that I will not lose much (except PhotoShop) as I managed to edit few videos on Resolve 15.

@ Shrinivas Ramani, as you suggested, I tried different codecs, none of them worked except MPEG. As soon as I stacked some clips on timeline (not much about 2 mins long), it stopped working as well. So I think my hardware spec is no good for Linux version. I ordered a GTX 1060 6GB card, I will run the tests once I have changed the graphics card. At the moment I have no time to replace the CPU because motherboard needed be replaced too. I'll try the graphics card first. In any case I'll upload the log files for the current configuration. Correction** I'll upload the logs once I've replaced the graphic card.

Many Thanks
Anton

Hi.

I a few weeks will the nVidea GTX 1660 and GTX 1660 Ti be introduced. I will expect them to be a much better choise for Resolve at the same price range.

Others with a 6GB card also have run out of vRam when editing 4K. Keep in mind that 8GB seems to be the minimum.

Finally, I can confirm that due to the graphics card it didn't work well on my Linux installation. With GTX 1060, it can export videos using DNxHD codec without any problem. I must stress the test timeline was rather small but I believe it will work for normal workflow.
Also, I like to mention if anyone looking for the reason why it worked on Windows installation because it uses H.265 as default and if I switch it DNxHD, it exhibited the same behaviour. On Linux, H.265 option wasn't available on Resolve free version. I'll play around a bit more before I walk in to Resolve Studio.

Happy Friday Everyone.
