# metadata for YYMMDD numbers in render file names?

Hi. I know there are some "hidden" Resolve metadata tags that can be used to write filenames or folder names (i.e. #I shows the shot number as shown in the color thumbnails). Is there any way to use a metadata tag that writes the current year, month and day in YYMMDD format?

Thanks,
Rodrigo

Anyone? This would improve our render setup time A LOT. I'd have the file path always set to YYMMDD_TIMELINE_NAME :)

The metadata tags in filenames are added with the percentage sign, %. But they are mostly clip metadata and I haven't found one for the current date.

How are you using #I? That one is new to me.

You could add render jobs programmatically using the Resolve API to achieve what you want. In practice it requires that you have set up a preset with the render settings you want to use since scripts can't change most of the settings.

But I don't think I would bother with all that. You can just tell Resolve to render using the timeline name and then run a renaming tool that adds the date afterwards to all files. Like Total Commander on Windows.

A definite +1 for this. It’s be great if you could also use standard Unix/C style format-strings so you could define how numbers are padded as well.

Should be a simple task writing a script to add to the delivery file name a date?
Am I missing something?

+1 keep meaning to ask for this in the feature request thread.

Was thinking the downside of using a script would be launching from the script menu instead of the render queue, but it just occurred to me that fusion has frame render scripts. Does Resolve have run on render scripts? In any case, a %Date token would be much easier.

That is a good idea. What we've used to get around this is file renaming utilities to add MMDDYYYY (or whatever is needed) as a prefix or suffix to render file names. I'm a big fan of Better Finder Rename (and Better File Renamer for Windows):

I agree, the current date is a great idea for another % variable within Resolve. I would use this with version numbers and stuff for feature projects in process, like show_name_R1_v3_02132020.

Considering that a variable system already exists, it is a fairly glaring oversight that basic datestamping variables are not available through this system.

So while it may be a “simple task” for some people to write a script (or use a secondary renaming utility) to add date stamps to exports, it’s an unnecessary extra step when the option can be made available as a variable token to begin with.

Just wanted to bring this up again as something I would really like resolve to have.

I can understand this request...
I personally - on Mac - use an external utility to do this : Rename makes it in a batch for any files, or Edit Ready when I also have to encode in ProRes at the same time anyway.
Both provide batches and both let you choose extra metadata to add (in addition of lots of default ones already available like autoincrement, date, etc...)

Hey there,

I'm bumping up this feature request. It would be super helpful to be able to %t today's date, with YYMMDD making the most sense.

+1 for this, very frustrating

I want time of day also. the moment the render started

primarily I just want a way to ensure that multiple renders don't replace each other
