16.1.2 Stability Issues

PostWed Feb 12, 2020 1:44 am

I've been working on a new project for a few weeks and upgraded to 16.1.2 just before starting. However, I'm getting a lot of crashes when performing a variety of tasks... scrubbing, playback, rendering, exporting... etc. I'm embedding the crash logs since I can't upload a .txt file.

Can you capture logs from the help menu, put the zip file on Dropbox or something similar, and paste a link here please?

Thank you.

Could you provide more info - what hardware you use and which DaVinci Resolve version you were using before 16.1.2? A link to the exported project file (drp) would help too.

You could attach your specs to your forum signature. Also if you have nvidia card (not quadro) then you need to use Nvidia studio drivers for it.

This is a zip file containing a copy of the project file and text file with hardware specs.

The problem has seem to gotten worse. Now with Davinci open both the program and the rest of my computer just stutters along. I opened Activity Monitor and it shows Resolve only using 20-24% of the CPU. I also did a diagnostic on my iMac and the report showed nothing wrong was found. I can no longer edit which is a major problem since my project is due in two days! Any help would be much appreciated!

Could you provide more info - what hardware you use and which DaVinci Resolve version you were using before 16.1.2? A link to the exported project file (drp) would help too.

Were you able to check out the files?
I tried to see if the project file was corrupt so I exported the project and then created a new project and imported my exported project file. At first that seemed to solve the issue but after a few minutes of normal functionality the app began to slow again and then just creep along. It's as if something is bottlenecking somewhere. It could take minutes for any clicks in the happen to actually function (click a menu item, navigate to Edit or Deliver windows, etc.).
Please let me know how else I can help solve this issue. My deadline is today and unfortunately I don't have a finished product because I everything in the app takes too long to perform. I appreciate any help.
Thanks!

Your GPU is very limited. Try to set your timeline to 'small' HD (1280x720).

And then, try to set GPU processing to OpenCL or Metal instead of Auto.

Yeah i had the same gpu before, and it was a terrible experience.. resolve is an extremely demanding app. Even with a 2080ti its still not flawless. But in my experience; most other NLE's perform better with lower-end pc's, but with high end systems resolve works better.

I know my system is near minimum but it doesn't explain why the project was editing fine and then all of a sudden it starts practically doing nothing. I've got the GPU setting at Open CL and I'm at 1080p but again, no problems and then all of a sudden it nothing. Even the rest of my system just grinds to a halt.

Would an external eGPU help?
Thanks!

As a reference point :

+) I get same sort of crashes - roughly every 30 mins.
+) Exactly the Same place in the stack log
+) 90% of the time I note the crash happens when I Resolve was idle (ie not processing)
+) Fusion not used : 4k Timeline : 111 clips : 1 repeating soundtrack : All clips stabilised

Thoughts:
+) I note that when some operations (eg like stabilisation) that autosave interrupts them (and I don't believe they then completed with addition actions. (I will slowly start changing system parameters to see if there is a correlation).

If you want me to experiment (ie attempt to hone in on the cause) - let me know.

After a 5 min check on the net - looking up "sigtramp + 29" to see if there is a prevalence of similar errors.

+) Is is an Xcode compile related page segmentation fault?

I note that many people (mostly Swift devs) are getting errors like this :

In reading some other posts I see I'm not the only one having crashes\freezes. I had not only given up my other subscription and purchased Studio, then I've spent countless hours to learn DR and working with Fusion. I even bought a new laptop thinking of all the progress I was could make on projects I have in to get done. But everything I've done has been a struggle.

I've written posts here looking for help (got very little to none and maybe my situation is different). I've submitted support requests, duplication steps, logs, and system info, and got no responses from that except one asking for more info a month or more ago. I've completely uninstalled and reinstalled clean the latest version, video drivers, downgraded to the recommended standard drivers, etc. etc.

So I'm about to be out $299 because I just can't use it anymore. I don't think I am doing anything special or complicated. When I just open a small project and it just bops out of memory, or working on a project and just try to select something in the timeline and it freezes, I have to save after every click, It happens with every project so at this point I've had enough.

I'm sure (or hope) I'm the exception and there is just something with my system or what I'm doing to cause it. But as I have work I need to get done I'm about to hit the delete key and switch back. Perhaps someday I'll install it again and hope the issues are cleaned up. But I can't spend anymore time right now.

I see you only have 4GB of VRAM... that's pretty light for DR16, especially if you plan to do anything other than 1080p work.

As others have suggested, I would also advise doing a clean reinstall of your video drivers -- since a bad/confused GPU driver can really cause major reliability issues.

The final option might be to try version 15.3 of Resolve since it is (for me) 100% rock-solid and totally reliable (as long as you stay away from the Fusion page). If you need Fusion, use VFX connect and run the stand-alone version of Fusion 9. This has also been pretty reliable for me -- well, reliable enough to get quite a bit of work done.

Joe,

Did you contact BMD support? Could you add a link to your log archive - see viewtopic.php?f=21&t=90190. An NFO file would help too.

Can I assume you have cleanly installed the nvidia studio driver? In its default configuration, Windows updates do overwrite these with native drivers - so please do check your Windows settings to check that you have disabled them and are using the manufacturer drivers.

Lastly could I check if changing the memory usage for Fusion and Resolve under Preferences > System > Memory and GPU helps w.r.t stability?

Thanks

Same position here. I had been using DR for several months, doing lite video edits to test it out. I don't do much post but this project came along and thought it would be a good opportunity to stretch it's legs. All was going fine until I was close to the end. I was just editing a Fusion comp I had already created when it just started to freeze. Checking over everything it seems to me it's something to do with the project file and not my system judging by its behavior. Just doesn't make sense that it was all running fine one moment and then just practically halt my whole system.
Thanks!

@Shrinivas : I will include testing with cacheing changes. I'll report back after my current project.
I am not sure if I can share the project export at this time. After I have distilled this to its minimum reproducible project - I will share that.

@Others : Can I suggest following the advice of starting with a known version of Resolve (15.3) that was working on a (mac or PC) OS version that did not have this problem.

Thoughts

In my Case, I've just jumped from Resolve 15.3 -> 16 and Also jumped to Catalina. I did not have any problems until this upgrade. As (I believe) I have seen Window's users with issues - it seems a good place to start would be to go back to Resolve 15.3 (which was pretty stable), and keep your OS version the same - to see if that solves the problem.

If you project is stable in 15.3 - but crashes in 16.1.2 : Then find the latest version of Resolve that is stable. This should help BM determine what is in the scope of changes that contributes to the crash.

Bobby,

Just out of curiosity could you attach a copy of the TWO Diagnostic files to (help) see why Resolve Crashed?

Open finder -> Go to the top level of your directory structure and then into :
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/

You should find a couple of files like:
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Resolve_2020-02-16-214143_Antonys-Mac-Pro.cpu_resource.diag
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReportsResolve_2020-02-15-191217_Antonys-Mac-Pro.wakeups_resource.diag

Attachments
You don't need to copy them into dropbox - you can attach them directly into the forum thread (just below 'Submit' - click on Upload attachment and then attach)

Bobby,

(Jumping ahead a possible causes - and I could be completely wrong)

What I am looking for a log in the Wakeup diagnostic that says .... Resolve woke up 4000+ times in a time period that '300' seems more reasonable.

If this is that cause - then it might be symptomatic of a race hazzard - or the BM code waking up a VERY LARGE number of times to do something on a blocked resources.

@Shrinivas,

Bobby's log file seems to show Resolve is trying to wake up >45,000 times in 30 seconds:

"Wakeups: 45001 wakeups over the last 30 seconds (1496 wakeups per second average), exceeding limit of 150 wakeups per second over 300 seconds
Wakeups limit: 45000"

The Diagnostic file indicates there is a 'limit' of 45,000.

I don't know what MacOs does if a thread from a App excessed the OS limit.
Is it possible that this has something to do with his crashes?

Not just the crashes but my system slowing to almost nothing. It takes about a minute or two for any clicks I make for the action to actually do something. Would that be a result as well?

@Bobby,

Q) Importing a v16 project into v15:

I am a complete Resolve beginner - It might be work someone with more experience to chime in.

- -

If Resolve is regularly crashing on this project (semi repeatable) can I suggest the following:

1a) Resolve 16.1.2 :
Export the project : file -> export AAF,XML.. -> Export FCPXML 1.8
Import this '.fcpxml' into a new project -> does Resolve Crash when you start using it?
<If you can't get this project to crash ... try step 1b>

1b) Resolve 16.1.2 :
Export the project : file -> export AAF,XML... -> Export EDL with audio
Import this '.edl' into a new project > does Resolve Crash when you start using it?

2) If either 1a or 1b cause Resolve to crash then:
2a) Backup the Resolve 16 database - keep it safe
2b) Installed Resolve 15.3
2c) import into resolve 15.3 the .fcpxml or .edl
2d) Does Resolve 15.3 crash?

If you can create a test case like the above that breaks 16.1.2 but is stable on 15.3 - it should assist the BM team work out what is going wrong.

@Bobby,

"Not just the crashes but my system slowing to almost nothing. It takes about a minute or two for any clicks I make for the action to actually do something. Would that be a result as well?"

I don't know which resource Resolve is hammering 1500 times a second.

My guess (based on some of the comments of Apple developers that have fixed issues that sounds similar) is that Resolve might have a coding issue that is continually polling for a Blocked resource - And doing it at such a rate that this is locking up the machine.

Completely Speculative
It might also be that the atomic state of a semaphore lock used by one thead in Resolve is not be correctly shared with another thread ... resulting in (a race hazzard in which) the second thread continuously trying to get a MUTEX (mutually exclusive lock on the resource)... and that MacOs is designed to kill the offending MUTEX requesting thread rather than cause the whole OS to get into a Locked state (ie to prevent a Kernel Panic - necessitating a reboot).

(UPDATE) - Took the project to another editor with an iMac Pro 5K Retina with 8 core CPU, 64GB ram, 8GB Radeon GPU and the project still stalled. Not as bad but still slow enough where working in it was not feasible. We were able to remove the Fusion comps from the timeline and that allowed the timeline to play. But even with the Fusion comps on separate timelines they would not render nor export. Clearly this is a problem with Fusion in which I hope BMD will resolve soon. For now I will have to recreate all my Fusion comps in After Effects.. shame, because I really liked working in Fusion. But I can't risk losing more money with software that can't perform.

Thanks for all who chimed in to help.
Thanks!

Did you only try the built-in Fusion or the standalone one too?
In my experience, rendering the FX into a mezzanine codec and using that in Resolve always helps on a weak machine. VFX Connect will make that simple.

I don't have the stand alone version of Fusion, just what comes with the Resolve Studio. I don't do enough post work to warrant another $300 for VFX software but good to know there's other options. Thanks.
Thanks!

There's a free version too. In my experience, it's much more stable than the integrated one.
