Split the forum?

PostFri Feb 14, 2020 6:06 pm

does make it sense to split the resolve big forum with fusion and fairlight sub forums?

Thoughts?

The Fusion forum predates the V15. It's traditionally been focused on standalone Fusion. It'd be just a matter of policy for users concerned with Fusion page in Resolve to post in that forum.

I prefer split forums. As someone who never has to deal with audio, I don't want to have to sift through lots of Fairlight related posts, and worry that "page" specific discussions may get lost and buried in a unified forum.

This relates to my long-standing request to split up the user manual, as well. Even though all of these features are integrated into one app, I'd wager that most dedicated colorists are not generally interested in the Fairlight page, and Fairlight editors prob don't care much about the Fusion page.

Put it all on one big page, and let "Search" sort it out. That's why I like the manual in one big file. The computer is supposed to do all the work.

I'm not sure why there should be separate forums for Davinci's Fusion versus standalone Fusion?

When I have a problem with nodes - even though I only use Davinci's Fusion - I'd hope the question can be seen by the standalone Fusion people, since they might have the answers.

Yeah, I've made the argument before that instead of one 3200-page manual, we need five much smaller manuals:

• config guide / installation
• Resolve conform / Editing
• Resolve Color
• Resolve Fusion
• Resolve Fairlight

I'd also like to see QuickStart guides for each. Looking at Walter's SoftImage manuals, it reminds me of Filmlight's approach to having three Baselight manuals: one for install/engineering/troubleshooting, one as an Operator's Guide with basically all the "how to's," and a Reference Guide that goes into every single knob, drop-down menu, control, and button in the software and on the panel.

I also completely agree with Walter that the problem with doing a general search for (say) LUT will kill you, because you'll never find the section you need. I've campaigned before (unsuccessfully) for an Index with hypertext for Resolve, but it hasn't happened. The advantage of an Index over a PDF search is that if you wanted to know (say) the effect of a LUT in ACES, you could go to the Index, look up ACES, then see if LUTs are mentioned somewhere in the subheads. It's doable, but it'd take a lot of time... especially for a 3200-page manual.

Place your bets on how long the manual for Resolve 16.5 / 17 will be in April...

Please breakout Fairlight. I have a very strange tidbits to deal with in it. There is enough there as a program to make it its own section.

Yeah, I just realized, the manual has no index!

But I still don't see the problem with search, as long as you can also search within the results. I can search for LUTs and a window with hundreds of results show up. Now, I seem to have a problem making acrobat search inside of that, but I blame the program (or myself for not knowing how to use it), not the manual, though I'm very disappointed there is no index, that's so weird, especially for something this big, but maybe an index would double its size. A hundred megabytes is already pretty impressive.

For the forum, I like one stop shopping there too. One window to rule them all. And you don't have issues with posting in the "wrong" forum either, getting tagged for being offtopic: Ohhh, you wanted arguments, I'm sorry, this forum is for abuse, you want the next one down

I personally prefer the current layout of the forums, but would really love to see the manual broken down in a similar way to Marc's suggestion.
