PC Motherboard for Resolve 10

PostSun Aug 11, 2013 7:44 am

We currently have a Resolve system built around the Asus P9X79 PRO mobo, which is working fine.
We want to build another PC system, but this motherboard seems to be discontinued; at least no hardware store in our area has it in stock.
Will Blackmagic recommend another PC motherboard with the release of Resolve 10? We are eagerly waiting for the new version with its documentation. But we don't want to make investments that will be out of specs in a few weeks.
Thanks!

It is not to hard to find a good mother board...there are alot out there. MSI bigbang 2 was a great board when it came out. won awards. Alot of good amd boards as well. I already built my PC a few months ago so I havent been keeping up to date. Point is. don't view the config guide like a bible...you can build a far better PC set-up then what blackmagic puts forth as standard.

If you can wait I'd hold off until the Ivybridge-E boards come out as they will be slightly faster than the Sandybridge-E and all bus lanes that go through the CPU are supposed to be PCIe-3 instead of PCIe-2 so you should be able to get the full speed from any GPU's you install.

Thanks for your tips, guys!
What should I look for in a motherboard? Is it the number of PCI lanes? If so, is that a chipset feature or is it mobo-specific? Anything else that I should consider?
Can you recommend a better motherboard (other than the P9X79) for a socket 2011 processor?

Hi,
the Asus P9X79 PRO is not out of production, it is still in the channel and will stay there for long time, and it is PCI-E 3.0 compliant. There are a lot of tests behind a certified motherboard, so, If you can, try to follow BMD system specs.
Best Regards,

But as Sandybridge-e doesn't support PCIe 3.0 it has to then drop everything down to PCIe 2.0 so even though they claim it's compliant it can't run at full PCIe 3.0 speed. It's a bit like the 'HD Ready' TV's that can take in a full HD signal but the screen itself is only 720p

Thanks for your replies!
After all the research, I haven't found any good reason to get another board other than the certified one; at least not for this generation of hardware. I think we'll go with the P9X79.

Good day

I am in the same position as you. To scared to stray far from the list of the Blackmagic certified boards but also hesitant to drop the money on old hardware.

From my research, what you prob want is a MB that can run 2 or 3 GPU's at x16 lane speed. Most MB's divide the lane speed as you populate them. So the first slot runs at x16 the second at x8 and the 3rd x4. Sometimes better, sometimes worse.
I have found an Asus card that can run 4 GPU's at x16 speed. Here is the link:
http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P9X ... ifications
This card also seems like its part of the family of the P9X79 Pro, which is a supported card.
So, I will run a GPU Card for the GUI, a GPU card for the processing and a Decklink 4K card. All will run at x16 speed, PCI gen3.
It also has the 2011 chipset. It does not have thunderbolt, which is a bummer!
So by association it "should" work... I might purchase this card soon and try it out.

I hope this helps a bit

Technically it can't run them all at 16x as the Sandybridge-e CPU only has 40 bus lanes. It uses a switching chip to 'fake' the 16xlanes, so 2 or possibly 3 16x slots are sharing 1 set of 16 lanes and the switching chip switches between the slots, so the cards think they are running at 16x but in fact they are sharing the bandwidth so effectively you have 32 or 48 lanes sharing 16 lanes . The same could be said for the PCI-e 3 they claim. The CPU only supports PCI-e 2 so the socket brings it in as PCI-e 3 then has to slow it down to PCI-e 2. When the new Ivybridge-E CPU's come out they will have real PCI-E 3 on them, but still only 40 bus lanes. If you really want more then you should consider a Dual Xeon board that supports 2 Sandybridge-E Xeon CPU's as that will give the amount of lanes needed.

Asus just announced a new pro mobo that will have two Thunderbolt 2.0 ports! The Asus P9X89 QUAD I think. It should be available in a couple weeks. I would built on that :ugeek:

Hi Adbear.
I understand what you are saying, thank you for the info, in most cases I think you are right. . .
but if I remember correctly the MB I was speaking of had more than 40 bus lanes. It also had 2 PCI controllers which would allow faster and more efficient pci speeds and bandwidth.

Sorry for any confusion.
I see that the link in my earlier post does not work anymore.
The MB I was referring to is the P9X79-E WS. It supports many GPU's at x16 speed (claimed?).
It also supports the new Xeon® E5-2600/E5-2600 v2 processors.

Would this be a good card for Resolve? Is it supported?
Thanks.

board mentioned in OP is available... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131800

ASUS is a solid manufacturer with no shortage of high-end socket 2011 boards similar in class/spec/quality and as others have said, they have a few boards with baked in TB if that's a dealbreaker for you.
