Nikon Z6 NEF Files "media offline"

PostThu Nov 04, 2021 2:21 am

Hello forum,

I've got a problem with importing .NEF files to DR on a MacBook Pro 19 and DR 17.4.1. The stills I want to import are always shown as "media offline". According to the user manual .NEF-files are supported by DR. I've searched this forum for settings I could apply but have not been able to resolve my problem.

I would be really happy if there is a solution to my problem.

Studio or free? I can import them here.

Hi Uli,
thank you for your reply and sorry for the missing information!
I have the studio-Version installed. Do I miss probably something in the preferences or do I have to do something special to get the .NEF files shown as not missing?

Does the user manual states which version of NEF is supported? The Z6 is likely a little different than older or now newer cameras. There is a reason Nikon has to release raw updates for windows machines.

Hello Nick,

thank you for your reply! :-) As far as I had a look in it there is no information about which versions of NEF are supported. All that is stated is that NEF is supported (at least as far as I am informed). I have tried all the possible NEF-settings of my camera ( 12-bit, 14-bit, uncompressed, ...). None of the possible combinations is working. The other thing is that there are definitely Nikon Z6 users who can import the NEF-files without problems into RS. I would be really happy about a checklist or something I could work through to identify the point where it breaks... or way better "a solution" :-D

Well, my files are out of the Nikon Z7 II, but I doubt they'd be different. Can you preview the stills in the Finder?
If not, it might be a feature supplied by a newer MacOS and not by DR itself (I'm on Monterey 12.0.1).
Could you supply a sample on a transfer service?

Hi Uli, thank you again for your reply!
I have absolutely no problem to view the NEF-files in the finder. They are shown pretty good there but as explained not in DRS.
I've created an archive with files I can and I can not open.
The files 0233 (Z6), 0306 (Z6), 0309 (D5100) can be added to the media pool in DRS and are shown. But if I begin to edit one of the files 0233 or 0306 the "viewer" turns black and nothing is shown again. I am only able to show the files without making changes to them.
The files 0418 (Z6), 0685 (Z6) are directly shown as "media offline".
I don't understand the differences between 0233, 0306, 0418, 0685 and 0309 yet.

Looks like Camera Raw Color Temp and Tint controls are what make the image go black if adjusted. All the other Raw controls can be adjusted without issue.

If you adjust Color Temp or Tint, and the image goes black, you can use the 3 dot menu and select Reset to get the image back.

Also interesting that the Color Space and Gamma selections don't seem to do anything to the working files.

All the files seem to behave the same on all 3 platforms. I don't see why Resolve doesn't like the 2 offline files. As best I can tell, there are no obvious differences between the working and non-working images.

On Windows, all the images open in XnView and Microsoft Photos, once the Raw Plugin is installed from the Windows Store. On Mac, they all open in Preview.

I'll mention this to the dev team to take a look at.

I'm seeing the same behaviour here.

Thank you Dwaine and Uli for having a look at the files!

I didn't recognize that only temp and tint make the files go black - thank you for that advice. Maybe I felt too lost at that point.

I am curious about what the dev team will say about this phenomenon!
