Brightness and contrast falsified when importing an MP4

PostWed May 25, 2022 4:46 pm

Hi there, unfortunately I didn't find out where to edit my signature.
I'm using Davinci Resolve Free 17.3.1 Build 5
When importing an MP4 video, brightness and contrast are falsified. Shadows are brightened up.
The video in question is this one:
https://ulrichbangert.de/div/davinci/P5 ... alq-13.mp4
VLC and MPC Black Edition are displaying the same video without issues.
This screenshot is demonstrating the issue:

How can I fix this?
Best regards - Ulrich

In the meantime I found a workaround by reading another thread in this forum:
in the attributes of the imported clip, there are three radiobuttons for "Data Levels": "Auto", "Video" and "Full". "Auto" is checked by default. When I check "Video" instead, the colors, lightness and contrast, are fine.
Obviously there is something wrong in the output of Topaz Video Enhance that prevents Davinci from detecting the correct setting in auto mode.

Start by watching this.

Next up, check out the section in Part 2 of the Reference Manual (found in the Help menu) called Data Levels, Color Management, and ACES.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

That's really such a non sense video. Warm fuzzy feelings. Blah blah talk about "quality". Not a single measurement, proof, evidence of anything. Waste of life time to watch.

OP: Go to clip attributes, toggle level between limited/full. That likely fixes it.

It's unfortunately a priority for some people in these forums to force feed their religion to new members and demonstrate their superiority by referring to broad sections in the manual instead of actually answering simple questions.

Hi @peterjackson,
many thanks for this hint, much appreciated.
While my initial posting was waiting for approval I already found a solution. Surely this is equivalent to the setting you recommended?
