Blackmagic Proxy Generator Failed

PostMon Sep 05, 2022 12:29 am

So, I just tried to create a proxy of a 4k zoom recording (2:25 hours long, 25 fps, 1301 kbps total bitrate, 126kbps audio bitrate, 32.000 kHz audio sample rate, mono).

So I add the folder where the 4k recording is located, select H.264 8 bit 4:2:0 1080p, and press "Start". After half a second, I get Status:failed

There is no error code, no hint what went wrong, no hint what I can do, nothing. Just Status:failed. It always frustrates me when developers don't include insightful and user-friendly error messages.

Does someone know what went wrong?

Just to add my experience with the proxy generator. I was converting approximately 120 4k 24pfs 10bit clips to H264 mp4.

Files were being read from a gigabit connection of a NAS server and written back onto the same gigabit connection on a NAS server.

My experience was that the proxy generator would crash every 20-30 clips without any warning about what the problem was.

The good news is that after restarting, it would pick up exactly where it left off until the next crash. Crashed 4 times in converting these clips.

I'm having the exact same problem on Windows. I leave the computer working and after a while the app is no longer running.

I can confirm this issue also. I have an ATEM EXTREME ISO project with five cameras, two of which are BMD Studio Pro 4K cameras recording Braw to external SSDs. I am trying to run BMD Proxy Generator (Resolve Studio 18.1 fresh install) over all the ISO files and the application crunches for a good few hours and then drops to desktop. No trace of it in Task Manager (Windows 10).

The entire project is stored on a Synology 1821+ NAS, BTRFS 4 disk SHR1 volume. Accessing via SMB over a 10 GbE dedicated network.

When the application fails, it leaves behind a .lock file. Here is the list of files it's working on and it seems to get stuck on one of the CAM 2 02 files, but I cannot tell which one because the resulting proxies don't reference the original file suffix. When I restarted it though, it goes to process the Braw file. Could it have a problem trying to name the files? ie There is already a file called CAM 2 02 and when it's completed the Braw version it cannot rename the TMP file to CAM 2 02 because there is already a proxy file with that name?

Happy to export EventLog or test further if BMD want as much detail as possible. The project is fairly big though - 745 Gb.

just wanted to check in and report the same error behavior. Blackmagic Proxy Generator works for a while and then just quits without any error message.
Will take up where it stopped once its restarted.

I have the same problem
Crashes and closes with no warning or error message
If I create the proxies within DaVinci Resolve I have no problems.

edit: Just in Windows, macOS works OK

A few things that might help people help with the issue:

Put your full system specs in the signature (including OS version, Resolve version)
Include screen grabs of the issue
Describe the full setup (source path, destination path, convert to type, etc)
Describe what is happening (Status failed popup? blue screen? smoke signal?)

"It failed" doesn't give us much to work with. Not saying that anyone WILL be able to help but if we get the full picture then MAYBE we will. Or at least I think we'd be more willing to return the effort.

I am having this problem as well. I have tried every format and get the same results everytime. I have also gone into all my previous project and deleted my previous "Proxy" files because I read that helped someone. However, that did not help me.

At the bottom right corner it says "3.28 GB Required" before start the generating. I have no idea what that means because I have far more than that available on my internal drive as well as my external drive.

I know this is an old thread but I hope someone will see and be able to help.

Thank you.

To me it simply doesn't work. According to the app, all my BRAW files don't exists, so it searches in "empty folder"

I'm having a similar issue.
Still a networked (10Gbe) drive (on a QNAP NAS).
Windows 10, 64-bit in my case.

The application simply crashes and disappears after running for...3-10 minutes.

But it works great on MacOS.

same for me... runs on my mounted 10G network drive, crashes and picks up, when restarted...
I thought of having some wrapper script to immediate startup, but didnt have the time to look into it...
or configure the proxy generator as a "windows service" somehow?

Re: Blackmagic Proxy Generator Failed

Never had any problem with Proxy Generator. Don't know if it has to do with latest update, but I get status "Failed" now as well. It's not continuing where it left off last time. It just reads "processing" and immediately "Failed". I also don't get the option to delete all proxies to start again.

I noticed why it failed: there were video files of 1280x720 (slow-motion) and the proxy generator can't turn these into 1080p proxies (makes sense).

However, now I've got a problem. Because of the slow-mo files, the proxy generator doesn't want to start-up anymore. Basically, I can't drop all my new video files in the watch folder as long as there's a 720p file in there :(

So now I have 2 folders on my hard-drive:
- All (new) video files --> Which is added as watch folder
- Slow-mo files --> manually removed from new videos :(
