Resolve 10: Slow FPS with Geforce GFX Titan

PostTue Jan 28, 2014 12:31 am

We have a Resolve 10 reference rig (i understand that this was bought from davinci/blackmagic) with the following configuration:

Motherboard X8DTH-IF
2 x Intel Xeon E5500
32 Gb DDR Registered ECC RAM
Geforce Quadro FX 5800 (for cuda)
Geforce Quadro 4800 (for gui)
Decklink 4K
Intel 10Gbps NIC (igxgb)
Power Supply is 760w
OS is Centos 5.4
Nvidia Driver 319.49
Davinci Resolve 10.1

The framestore is a NAS on a 10Gbps with according to frametest is able to handle realtime R/W up to 4K.

This system is capable of rendering 15 FPS and full speed playback

We bought a GFX Titan card thinking on improving the render speed, but unfortunately when we install it the actual render performance goes down the drain to less than 5 FPS and playback speed suffers as well.

I'm at odds about what could be causing this performance drop.
Best guesses so far are:
- Lack of Power supply oomph
- PCIe x8 slot (motherboard has physical 16x connectors but they are only 8x electrically)
- CPU Bottleneck

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Gerardo.

Did you replace one of the existing cards with the Titan? Or add it in addition to the other cards?

I think if you just remove the 4800 and 5800, and place the Titan in the 5800 position (should be slot 6) it should work better than the 4800/5800 pair of cards.

I tried that, removed both old cards and insert only the Titan, i tried inserting it into both of the two slots with the same results. The 3800 card is sitting on the 2nd slot below the cpu socket, with the 5800 sitting two slots below it.
This is how the system looks:

Managed to get a somewhat usable system (render perfomance on par with the old 5800 card), by leaving just the Titan on slot #6 while the decklink and the 10GB nic are on slots #1 and #2, which are on different QPI links.
I'm still puzzled about the lack on improvement on rendering, i was expecting near/realtime performance but i can't seem to get past 14 FPS, however GUI preview/playback speed has improved significantly even with multiple nodes and effects.
