Debayer in DaVinci?

PostFri Oct 19, 2012 1:29 am

Hi guys, a friend of mine debayered DNG Raw in adobe application and his output is obviously better than what I did with DaVinci 9 most recent beta, say sharpness and clarity.

Is it because adobe developed DNG Raw format so they are much more experienced in debayer and keep their algorithms secretly?

To my knowledge, BMD owns Teranex, who are the very best in regards of image resampling. Hope we can see some improvements in DaVinci final version.

What did you guys encounter, same as me?

Thanks

Hi Jason, the debayer in Resolve is developed by our Resolve R&D team and is often compared favourably by our Hollywood customers and also by the vendors of other cameras that Resolve debayers in GPU. That said, if you have an example of a CinemaDNG sequence that you would like us to specifically review please contact us at davincihelp (at) blackmagicdesign (dot) com. We are keen to have a look.

There is also a clear distinction between processing a single frame of a raw DNG, which can take some time, and processing in real time playback with CinemaDNG so your friends comparison needs more clarification before it can be considered valid. FYI, the bayer format was invented by Bryce E. Bayer of Eastman Kodak (1976 patent) and both DNG and CinemaDNG are just packaging formats for the image data.

Hello,

now it begins...
These are the comparisons I had feared and of which I had warned!

Therefor I would prefer if BMD would offer a

BMCC's CinemaDNG De-Bayering SDK to NLE vendors,

so we customers would get:
- DaVinci's excellent de-bayering (of course BMCC specific only) within all our favorite apps
- consistency in quality, regardless the app we use
- the security to have the one and only right method for de-bayering BMCC footage,
sparing endless debates ;)

Best regards,
Bernhard

P.S.:
@Jason: I do NOT criticize You nor BMD!
I criticize the situation that we are faced with a new form of complexity,
and everything that helps reducing complexity is appreciated.
