18.6 Wont startup

PostMon Sep 18, 2023 12:56 am

Hi,

I have been trying to run Resolve 18.6 over the last few days with no luck.
I uninstall 18.5.1, restart PC, clean install 18.6 restart pc and try to start 18,6, once the startup splash screen came up for a few seconds then it just disappeared, most times nothing at all, I have opened the task manager and 18.6 shows up for a few seconds then it's gone. I uninstall 18.6 go back to 18.5.1 and all works fine.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
Nick

Running into the same issue. Just updated to Resolve 18.6. The Resolve splash screen appears for a few seconds and crashes once it reaches "LOADING PROJECT SETTINGS".

EDIT - SOLVED

What fixed it for me was going into:
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design

And renaming the 'Davinci Resolve' folder to 'Davinci Resolve.old'. Try running Resolve again. Resolve should auto-create a new folder. After restarting Resolve, I got past the splash screen but was instead getting an 'Davinci Resolve Unexpectedly Crashed' error.

I restarted my computer and ran Resolve again and it worked! My project database was gone so after that I just deleted the newly created 'Davinci Resolve' folder and renamed 'Davinci Resolve.old' back to the original name to get my projects back!

Hope this helps

@Nick:

With 18.6 installed and not working:

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows Desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open the Windows System Information app and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here. Make sure the links don't require access credentials.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.

thanks for your reply,
I have sent those through to Brendan at New Magic in Australia, he's been really helpful, and they have been forwarded to Singapore. Hopefully I'll hear something soon.

@Ismael: Open Windows Settings - Apps & features, and uninstall the DaVinci Resolve Control Panels app.

Resolve should work after that.

It seems you dropped through the cracks due to my initial inability to access your logs and NFO.

Try this:

The following process will MOVE your Resolve preferences files to a backup location. This will force Resolve to create a new set of default preferences files when it launches. If this solves the launch issue, that would imply there was some corrupt preferences related file causing the startup issue.

Open File Explorer Options, and on the View tab, enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

Also unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then in File Explorer, navigate to this folder:

C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

Rename the Preferences folder to Preferences.old

Now see if Resolve will start.

If it does, it will have all the Resolve preferences set to default values.

If you had more than the standard default "Local Database" project library, those will not be shown. You'll need select the "Add Project Library" button and then select the "Connect" item, then enter the name and location of the project library(s). You can find that info in the dblist.conf file in the Preferences.old folder.

And if you had any other Resolve Preferences items modified from their default values, you'll need to modify those again as desired.

If Resolve still doesn't start, send a new Resolve log file.

No idea if this applies, but, If you are using a VPN disable it when starting Resolve. I had this issue for 3 days. I tried 3 different versions of Davinci Resolve Studio. Turned out it was, I assume, Resolve not getting or allowing connection to check my studio license. I use NordVPN if that helps.

Some Nord VPN versions have caused startup issues in the past, so that's not a bad idea.

+1 to this.
Currently running Davinci Resolve 18.6.2 and was running into issues with the program not starting.
I turned of my Nord VPN connection and Resolve loaded up perfectly fine.

Maybe some sort of anti-piracy safeguard that's causing issues?

Similar issue.

Currently Installed 18.6 but after entering serial it stops responding - never makes it to the project screen.

Ran Microsoft registry repair tool. Uninstalled black Magic Control Panel. All drivers and windows updated.

This issue started when downloading latest update we have used free version instead of studio. That ran fine - once I realized its the wrong version tried uninstalling it. It was nowhere in the programs and features. Removed manually and removed the registry keys. After tried installing Studio - it was impossible until I ran the registry repair tool that removed all traces.

However, newly installed Studio crashes after I attempt to activate it.

I will try to obtain a log of the event - not currently able - possibly because I am not a Admin level user on this corporate PC.

I'm having a similar issue, and have been for the past few updates on DR.

I haven't been able to update because of it. It sits at "Project Loading" or the first one I opened it, it got to the projects, but never loaded the thumbnails/etc and kept having a spinning wheel icon.

I have already uninstall the control panel, with no luck.

All drivers are updated.

I have tried the renaming in the AppData folder (Both preferences, and the parent folder to a .old version of themselves)

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

So I guess here's my link to mine. Hopefully that works.

It's a new one for me.

Resolve is upset with your Python 3.11 install. That's probably related to attempting to start the Resolve script server.

You could try uninstalling your Python install, and see if that helps.

Or, if you are handy with a text editor, you can try adding this line to the end of your config.dat and .config.data files:

System.Scripting.Mode = 0 (type it exactly as shown. Case and spacing matter).

Those 2 files are located in this folder:

C:\Users\Korey\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences

You may need to modify the File Explorer options to allow showing hidden files/folders.

Thank you!

Ok, so I first tried the option of editing the files, however that did not work. It did however get me to the Projects Selection screen, but things like Thumbnails were not loading, and it went into an indefinite loading wheel till it would force close.

I however am not using Python 311 very often currently, so I did uninstall it, and magically.. it works.

So maybe this is a bigger issue with pre-installed stuff, which seems to be conflicting with DaVinci? If so, might be something that needs to be put into a work log for a future update?

It appears you have displays on both the GTX1080 card and the onboard iGPU. Either disconnect the display connected to the onboard video port or move it to the GTX1080 card, and see what happens.

Resolve is crashing during the GPU detect process, due to OpenCL errors. This is likely from the onboard Intel HD 530 iGPU, which has a very old driver (which is the only driver available on the Dell Support site). My hope is that by removing the display from that iGPU, the Resolve GPU detect process may ignore it.

But if you still have issues after moving the display, then open Windows Device Manager, select Display Adapters, and right click the Intel HD 530 adapter, and select Disable device, and then see if Resolve will start.
