Topaz Video AI OFX plugin for Davinci Resolve

PostWed Feb 28, 2024 12:03 am

This is a pretty cool news.
Topaz Video Ai has an OFX plugin for Resolve now, it's in Beta.

https://community.topazlabs.com/t/topaz-video-ai-4-2-0/63974

Video AI is now available within Davinci Resolve as an OpenFX plugin. This first release includes all Enhancement models + Motion Deblur for both Windows and macOS.

The OpenFX plugin can be installed either during app installation (automatic on Windows and an optional checkbox on macOS) OR after app installation from the “Plugins” button in the app’s top menu bar.

Just installed on my Studio Max and PC. Automatic install on PC. On Studio Max there was a section to check mark for Resolve . Not done any tests yet. Installation went smooth and selection on timeline is just like any other filter. Selections in inspector>effects are just like standalone version. Will do some tests later today.

Looking forward to hearing your results, particularly performance assuming all else equal to the standalone. What is the pricing these days? (Yes, I know I can Google it, lol).

They have some discount quite often, last one was Valentine ;-)

That said, it's crashing here, both after an update from within the program and after a clean install too. Sent them the log, it may need some more work.

Yes - I checked out the comments on their support forum under the release notes for 4.2.0 and there were many comments about crashing and other suboptimal behaviour. I expect the plugin will be very slow. Question in my mind is, will it be slower than the standalone app (which I've heard is quite slow)? I imagine it depends on what you are trying to do with it (noise, rescale, stabilizing, etc.).

There are detailed reports for different hardware in their forum.
The Nvidia 4090 is helpful here too.

Standalone works ok with a 4090 but the beta plugin doesn't support the tensor cores (yet?) so it might be significantly slower as a plugin with Nvidia hardware.

Unfortunately, 4.2.0 is even crashing here right from the start.

Just did a few tests on the PC. Not tried the Studio Max yet as most of my source is on the PC. At first it crashed couple of times but eventually got things to work. I tried a 720x480 progressive file in both Stand alone and Resolve. I did a X2 upscale in stand alone and placed a file in the Resolve project at 1280x720 and Topaz plugin doing scaling x2. So result should have been the same with Topaz doing the upscale in both cases. Stand alone appeared to be twice as fast and as expected both were very slow !! 3.5fps for Resolve plugin and 8.5 to 14.5 for stand alone depending on model used. I tried several models. One nice thing about the plug in is it is easier to see how the models perform. To me easier than starting several previews in the stand alone.

Yeah it's not great yet.

It's very slow, for now. It's still a beta but useless to me in this form.
Especially if it doesn't use all the improvement of the standalone version.
Getting from 16-17fps to 3-4 (if it doesn't crash), meh.

I don't know why they released so soon.

I hope they get stabilization in there. How well does it work with BRAW files?

The plugin is pretty buggy and not very useful at the moment
And it's way slower than the standalone (for now). So it's faster to do a quick render in place, and load the rendered file in the standalone software, and import it again.

Stabilization is not its strongest feat, and it doesn’t read BRAW.

Whoa, that totally sucks. Sticking with standalone for now.

It doesn't read BRAW while in Resolve?

Sorry, we are going in circles now. It’s reading BRAW in DR, of course, but that one is buggy and slow.
If you have a good card, it will be faster to convert BRAW to something that the standalone version can handle.
But allow me a stupid question: why TVAI for BRAW? Only stabilization?
DR can do that just as good, actually even better.
