Issue with trackers

PostSat Apr 13, 2024 11:33 pm

I'm trying to create a timelapse video from ~3800 photos I took of the eclipse. The images are in .dng format. The sun moves across the frame and every so often I had to readjust the position so it jumps around.

I'm new to using the trackers so I have been experimenting with the different ones. With the planar tracker on an area I was able to track and stabilize a small subset(~80) of the images.

When I try to do more images it reaches the point where I re-adjust the camera alignment and the sun jumps around the frame and the tracker stops. I've tried the point tracker and putting that on sun spots but that seems to loose track earlier.

I started trying with 18.6.6 and then yesterday I tried switching to the 19 beta and I'm not seeing much better results. I'm also seeing a high number of Davinci Resolve crashes as well.

I saw them with ver 18 and also see them with the 19 beta. Any recommendation on which tracker technique I can use to create this stabilized timelapse video?

I took a look in the Windows event viewer and it looks like the crashes are caused by:

An application has requested more GPU memory than is
available in the system.
The application will now be closed.

Your source frames might simply be too large for your VRAM.
What will be your final resolution?
Finally, was your camera on sticks and not being touched between adjustments? You may not need tracking at all, since the earth is rotating at pretty constant velocity. Just use two manual keyframes for each shot, then arrange them by precise editing and transforms.

The images are 8192x5464 in .dng format. Video timeline is set to 8k.
The camera was on a tripod and a star tracker not calibrated accurate enough for a 1000mm equivalent lens. The sun tracks across the frame in about every 80-100 pictures so there would be many manual key frames I would need to set.

I'm afraid you don't have enough VRAM. For a timeline in 8K you should have 24 GB.

Doesn't that limit someone to editing 8k only on a desktop with a Nvidia 3090 or 4090 with 24GB?

Hardware has its limits, to do something you either have to tame your needs or oomph up the hardware.

That's how all editing should be done. ;)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I switched it to a 4k timeline. That seemed to help with it not crashing anymore but now I'm back to the tracker issue. The further I have gotten it to track was about 2000 frames but if I try to render that it did not seem to stabilize the footage.
