"User cache" and "Render cache Clip Output" missing option

PostWed May 01, 2024 9:33 am

Hi all,

Looking at the DR manual for version 18.6, page 191, I see that I can set the cache to USER and then manually select what clips I'd like to cache by right clicking on them and selecting "Render Cache Clip Output".

I do not see this option. I see a "Render Cache Fusion Output" and "Render Cache Color Output".
I get somehow inconsistent results when I select the Fusion cache as DR might cache but with some delay (more than the one set in the preferences) or not cache at all.

Is this "broken" or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Just a difference of terminology. What you see in Resolve is it. You can Cache Fusion, Color, or both. (The fun part is in knowing which option will cover the difficult effect you need to Cache. It's not always obvious.)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Uhm... How do I cache a 1000x sped up clip then? It's not Fusion nor Color. :)

I suppose it's not color.

Well, I'd guess it's not Fusion. It boils down to the Order of Node Operations.

If it were me and I was dealing with a 1000x speed change, I'd render it in place on the Edit page to a benign format like DNxHR 444 or ProRes 444 (same res as camera original).

Of course. I'm not a fan of "render in place" as it flattens everything. I might need to adjust those clips later.

The thing is that if I enable both colour and Fusion, it does cache it. It just it seems I have to attempt to play it once (choppy playback of course) for DR to understand "ok, I need to cache this".

I would expect a "click here to cache me" and 2 seconds later DR starts caching. Too simple I guess :)

You can restore the original clip under the render-in-place.

I can but it's an extra step - also if not mistaken it's also an extra file (does it get overwritten if I render the same clips in place again?).

The cache would work perfectly for me. "cache this section", wait a few seconds and done. And if I change something, it re-caches it automatically.

Yeah, there is more power in what Resolve currently offers - if you know how to use it. ;)
