First thing I’d do is see if your external drive is mounted to the same folder in /Volumes. You can do that from the command line by typing:
mount
It’ll give you a list of where your drives are mounted. You might see an unexpected numeric suffix at the end showing that macOS has attached it at a different folder than it was originally.
If that’s the case then mystery solved. Try ejecting and re attaching it and see if it changes back to the original name. If not I can help you farther. As can Google.
