Unable to export to Animated GIF with the transparency

PostThu May 16, 2024 12:12 am

Hello,

Just trying to create an animated GIF from a small video, for an email signature. I'm using a bumper video that i already have and importing it on to a low resolution timeline. Then I export to GIF, which works perfectly, providing there is no transparency needed.

However if I want to export to GIF when the video clip does have transparency (Alpha) visible in it. it doesn't include the transparency in the exported GIF, and instead replaces it with black. This is of course with the 'Export Alpha' check box selected (on the delivery page under GIF output file type), along with: Pallete generation 'medians' and with 256 colours.

I've tried using all sorts of different GIF export settings that are available on the delivery page, but to no joy.

Any advice would be awesome, thanks in advance.

Color Page. You need to connect the input to alpha on the node. And you need to add an alpha output (right-click in blank area) & connect that to node as well:

GIFs can not have an alpha channel. You have to use a solid color then define that color as transparent in the display application or html code on a web page.

Using the method I described on a clip with any areas that have a 100% transparent alpha channel—produces a GIF with those areas as transparent, which I believe is what Alex was wanting to do.

But the pixels do need to be 100% transparent to work since GIFs with transparency do not have various levels of transparent, just all or nothing.

My bad. GIFs can have transparency, just not degrees of transparency as visualfeast has said.

Post a sample gif and screenshot of your nodes.

I meant post a sample of your exported gif.

Make sure you’ve checked ‘alpha’ on the Deliver page. Then test by bringing the gif back in and place over another background, or enable the checkerboard viewer background on Edit page (v19).
