5K iMac

PostSat Nov 08, 2014 10:54 pm

I'm looking to seriously upgrade to the new 5k iMac Retina from an ailing 2011 Macbook and want to check the AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics processor is okay to run Da Vinci lite. I'm guessing it's fine but it's a hefty investment and like to be assured.
Anyone purchased one of these machines yet?

I would imagine its ok.. but thats a huge number of pixels that the GPU is having to draw just for the screen before being used to run Resolve + the GPU is of "medium" performance .. not super high already. I would firstly wait and see what others think, but also for $250 you can move up to a quite a bit better "R9 M295X with 4GB" with a custom configuration. This would still be far less than say a high end dual GPU mac pro or a Custom PC or previous Mac Pro Tower with an updated GPU but it will give a huge boost to Resolve so that would defiantly be worth getting for your use case!

Thanks James, sounds like a very good option at a reasonable price.

like has being said, it is a big monitor and the GPU will be used a lot just to draw the GUI....

Max the GPU card and the GPU RAM if you are going down that route.... (and max the CPU/RAM as well while you're at it....)
W10-19043.1645- Supermicro MB C9X299-PGF - RAM 128GB CPU i9-10980XE 16c 4.3GHz (Oc) Water cooled
Decklink Studio 4K (12.3)
Resolve 18.5.1 / fusion studio 18
GPU 3090ti drivers 512.59 studio
