Drag and Insert clip in timeline?

PostTue Nov 18, 2014 12:00 am

Simple timeline editing function that seems to be absent from Resolve's editor....

I cannot find a way to drag a clip from one point in the timeline to a different place and drop it in, filling its own gap from the original location and "making room for it" in the new spot by rippling everything else.

I read the relevant section of the manual, and my only options seem to be:

To move clips in the Timeline: Drag any clip in the Timeline to any other position. If you drag a clip to overlap another clip, the clip you’re dragging overwrites the clip you’re dropping it onto.

To move clips in the Timeline up or down to other tracks while keeping them at the same
time: Hold the Shift key down while dragging clips up or down in the Timeline.

Duplicating Clips in the Timeline
Clips can also be duplicated by making a selection, and then Option-dragging the selected clips to
another position and/or track in the Timeline.

On a Mac, my only other options are Ctrl and Cmd, neither of which give me the desired effect. Then there's Slide, but this will not extend up or down the timeline past the two adjacent clips.

I'd love to know if this functionality exists. Even confirming it doesn't is better than not knowing.

Fit to fill? Drag the new clip to the window on the right, assuming the playhead is on the old clip, and you should be presented with a list of options. This is more like an NLE setup as opposed to physically dragging the clip down to the timeline. You can ripple, roll, do all that stuff.

But in this case I'm referring to a clip that's already in the timeline, which I would like to move to another spot in the timeline, not an unused clip from the bin. It may be that I have to matchframe or cut and get the clip back into the left monitor to insert into the new spot. That's a bit of a messy workaround, though.

No clue. I'm a colorist, not an editor... though I admit the lines are blurring too much these days.

Try Option drag and shift drag.

Does anyone know a solution to this? Its an old post but since Resolve is now up to 15 I'm hoping its fixed.

I'm coming from Premiere and its a way of editing I do all the time. I dont use the source window at all.

I just want to be able to take a clip on the timeline and do an insert in another part of the timeline, but I can only get it to do inserts from the bin?? But I'm new to Resolve.

Try Command shift drag to remove a clip from the timeline, insert it elsewhere and ripple to fill the original source location. if that helps ?

Simon, I use
CRTL + SHIFT + , for "Swap Clips Towards Left"
CTRL + SHIFT + . for "Swap Clips Towards Right"

Repeated presses of "," or "." move the clip further up- or downstream.

Hi guys,

CTRL + SHIFT is is close but it just seems to be affecting the clips on the same video track and not rippling all tracks.

Peter I am on Windows so I'm not sure what the Windows equivalent is for COMMAND + SHIFT. I tried all the combinations I could think of.

Somewhere I came across a youtube video that showed it working on windows I think but I cant remember the combination.

Actually I think your right CTRL + SHIFT might be doing it if the clip I'm dragging is on a track with no other clips. Maybe just buggy still being in beta?

I am very new with DaVinci Resolve, and had the same question.
I succeeded by following below instructions:
- select the picture or video to reposition and select in the edit menu "ripple cut" followed by
- place the timeline marker at the position where you want to insert the video and use in the edit menu "paste insert"

Let me know, if this helped.

Note:

CTRL + SHIFT + . works but
CRTL + SHIFT + , doesn't.
(Windows 10, German keyboard, Resolve 15.1)

CRTL + SHIFT + Drag works fine.

Old answer, but still useful for newbies (like myself) Still learning a ripple cut from other things. Thanks, it was just what I needed.

BUMP

Still trying to find a solution. Premiere uses Ctrl + drag. Does an insert similar to dragging from source window to insert on timeline window or F9. Ctrl+Shift+, or . is good for moving a few spots or if you're not holding the mouse. But sometimes the mouse is actually faster (like moving a clip 15 spots up or down the line.)

Resolve uses Ctrl+Shift + drag to drop the clip on a lower track. I've never had a need for that. Maybe others have but at least for me doing an insert is far more common.

The best solution I've found is to Ctrl + Shift + X to ripple cut
and then Ctrl + Shift + V to ripple paste it somewhere else.

There is no way to do it with mouse dragging (like final cut pro x, which can do it, preview and all) that I know of.

Ive just moved from PrPro to Resolve on Mac.
On the timeline I want to move a clip in front of another on track 2 & swap their position similar to an insert.
In PrPro I simply hold OPTION + CMD and move the clip.
Is there a way of doing this in Resolve?
In Resolve when i select SHIFT + CMD I can move the clip to insert in front of other, but it moves all the tracks like an insert edit from source window which I don't want.

Is there a way to have this command shift on all the time so it just moves clips. Like final cut pro x does.

Is Resolve still without this capability? to drag a clip without overwriting? I'm new to the software but have looked everywhere for a solution, assuming I am missing something. I have been editing digitally since the 90's and have never used a package without this basic ability.

On a Mac, hold the command key down and drag will move a clip on a timeline to another position "non destructively". Same as a Ripple Cut and a Ripple Paste.
If you watch the timeline, you it will paste it between clips, or an insert cut if you place it on a clip rather than between clips.

I just read this whole thing and was like "nope. no way to do it" then I go on Resolve and see if I just hold CNTR SHIFT it works. BUT you have to give it a sec. Yeah. Like just hold on it and they will all shift downward. It's not immediate like on Premiere.

Yes, but this only works if the clips are in the same track.
If you take a clip from another track and ctrl-shift drag it you'll get the most weird results.

Really a shame Blackmagic can't "resolve" this mess after 10 years!

I've found that if the Auto Track Selector is not enabled on each track, then they will not ripple during the insert. That's the little [<>] icon in the track. Make sure it's highlighted and those tracks will ripple during the insert.
